Trinidad and Tobago celebrate Independence Day every year on August 31st, for it was on this day in 1962 that the country gained independence from the United Kingdom. As a public holiday, most banks, public offices and businesses are closed. Many people take the opportunity to spend time with friends and family, head to the beach, or enjoy the day's parades and evening fireworks.
