Practical Information

Though the history of this church goes back to the beginning of the 16th Century, it was actually built in the 19th Century. That wooden building was ravaged by a fire in the War of Restoration in 1863. A new church was rebuilt much later in the 1950s. The present Catedral San Felipe Apóstol (St. Philip the Apostle Cathedral) was erected after an earthquake damaged the structure in 2003. Its modern Victorian architecture gives an old worldly look. The huge twin bell towers and the cross-shaped stained glass window are striking features of this Roman Catholic sanctuary. Inside it is completely done in white with the stained glass windows adding some color to it. It is the seat of the Diocese of Puerto Plata.
