Independence Day commemorates the 1844 war that gave Dominicans freedom from Haitian rule. Dominicans mark Independence Day on February 27 but the party continues all month as part of Carnival.

Each Sunday, you can see Puerto Plata locals parading down the Boulevard, dressed in masks and costumes. Expect loud music and a lively atmosphere and prepare to dance most nights away.
