Built in 1879 as a beacon for on coming marine traffic, Puerto Plata Lighthouse is embedded into the history and culture of the island. An unconventional structure for a lighthouse, being just several metal pillars, a spiral staircase and the beacon hosed at the top; the structure has gone on to become one of the major attractions on the island. Towering at 24.38 meters (79.98 feet), the lighthouse offers breath-taking panoramic views of the surroundings and is a popular photography spot.
