Bring your swimsuit and hop on the bus that says El Tuito (at the corner of Carranza and Aguacate). This scenic ride takes you along the coast about 19 km south of the centre of town. The Botanical Gardens include 3,000 different species of plants spread over more than 198 acres. Just be sure to wear walking shoes so you can explore the various trails and themed collections of palms, roses, ferns, agaves, orchids, Mexican wild flowers, coffee and vanilla trees.

A fascinating variety of birds and butterflies also call these gardens home, so bring your camera and binoculars. Take a refreshing dip in the Rio Los Horcones, then head up to the Hacienda de Oro restaurant for an al fresco lunch. Try one of the pizzas from their wood-burning oven or a healthy salad.
