Punta Cana is one of Dominican Republic's renowned places for diving with its shipwrecks, discovery cruises, snorkeling cruises, reef exploration and scuba diving. Dotted with white sand beaches, it offers a variety of options for water sports enthusiasts. Astron is among the top five shipwrecks in the country that can be seen from the shore. It is also a major attraction in the city. Though built in France in 1957, this oil tanker was owned by a Russian firm. The 127-meter (417 feet) motor ship was wrecked in two while enroute to Cuba from Punta Cana in 1978 by a storm. You can see its ruins from the beach or embark on a diving trip to catch a glimpse of this ill-fated ship up close. You will find also its new marine residents interesting.
