  3. Sint Maarten Day

November 11th is the feast day for Saint Martin in the Christian religion, and also the day in 1493 when Christopher Columbus first set eyes on the island. Because of this, Columbus named the island after the saint and the name has stuck ever since. As a public holiday in Sint Maarten, many businesses and government-run facilities are closed. The populace spends the day waving flags and celebrating the country's cultural heritage.
