Thunder Bay Art Gallery first opened its doors in 1972, much to the excitement of art-lovers across Ontario. However, the facility it was housed in was determined to be much to small, once faculty realized just how many visitors would come to admire the gallery's collection. In 1976, the gallery was moved to a new, much larger building. Today, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery is the largest gallery showcasing public art in the north-western zone of Ontario. It is known for exhibiting the artwork of artists that hail from the First Nations. In 2005, the gallery officially approved a display of work created by local as well as regional artists. The gallery has three different exhibition spaces which can also be rented out for private and corporate events.
