Though El Morrillo was built in the 18th Century, its present layout came into form in the 19th Century. Erected to protect the city from buccaneers through the Matancera bay, it was later used as a Spanish customs register and a naval station till 1934. It was where revolutionaries, Antonio Guiteras and Carlos Aponte were killed by Batista's men before they could escape to Mexico. Museo Memorial El Morrillo came into existence in 1978. Get to know the history of the aboriginal in the archaeology section. Or why a defence building was needed. You will see how this historic structure was built, torn down and again rebuilt. At the memorial, the remains of these activists are kept with details of their lives and how they met with their end.
