Discovery Day is a public holiday in the Yukon, held on the third Monday of August. The holiday commemorates the beginning of the Yukon's gold rush back in August of 1896. Most banks, public offices and businesses are closed on this day. Many people use the long weekend as an opportunity to plan outings. The holiday was first proposed by the Yukon Order of Pioneers in 1911 and Discovery Day became officially recognized by the Yukon's Territorial Council.
