My wife and I stayed in a room at the beach club during a family reunion. Had a nice view of the pool and the Lanai. The beach area was incredible as was the beach bar and the beach bar staff. If you wanted something more to eat than sandwiches though you had to leave the property but not necessarily very far because there were several really good restaurants close by. The exercise facility was much nicer than most hotels with dumbbells, exercise machines and cardio equipment.

The Waiohai is the BEST timeshare anywhere!!!! The employees work hard to make each visit special! Delia runs great activities for kids! They ALWAYS do everything possible to make our visit wonderful!

“Meh” for the price. (About 600usd/night)

First time staying at a “beach club” resort. Went through the marriot website (vs VRBO or timeshare site) to get a suite with more of a hotel feel and amenities. Service was mediocre, cleaning staff didn’t do a good job. Shower was nasty from the last guest (then I asked them to come back to clean it) Didn’t vacuum unless we asked (and tipped). Beds were not properly made (they just threw the sheets back on, ie didn’t tuck them in or attempt to straighten them out). Hurricane Lane was passing through and I was told that I would be moved to a shelter or find another hotel if my flight was cancelled (but they said they were fully booked). They didn’t really give reassurances of preparedness. I was given a handout to go and buy 3 days worth of food and water at a supermarket 20min drive away. When I asked for extended checkout 5 months in advance (I was with young children and seniors) they said they couldn’t but eventually gave us an extra hour (10am to 11am). There’s a bar close to the beach/pool but no poolside service. There’s no restaurant in the premises. For about $600 usd/night I expected more. I honestly kind of feel ripped off. Good thing the island was beautiful.

    Killer Gardens / Disorganized Staff

Astonishingly beautiful location and property, with blooming gardens, lagoons, waterfalls, 3 swimming pools AND a private swimming/surfing beach. Downgraded to 3 stars because the staff is so unhelpful and disconnected. They don't have an airport shuttle. When we called the number they gave us for help with transportation, they did not have any options to suggest. They ended up referring us to the airport staff. Once at the resort, we realized that it would have been better to rent a car, as it is pretty isolated from attractions or services, and the resort staff don't know how to arrange transportation. They do have activities within the resort, and a concierge, but they and the front desk are 3 different departments, and the guests are left to seek out and collect information from each one on their own. When we checked in, we were directed to our room via the perimeter of the property, and so we did not encounter the Welcome Desk across the lobby, nor did the front desk tell us about it. Nor did they tell us about the concierge hidden around the corner on the Activities Lanai. We happened upon a sunset dinner with live music, and a mixology class on our own, both of which we enjoyed, but once we found the guy with the activities schedule, it was already too late for most of them. The pools were crowded. As Hurricane Lane approached, the ocean became too choppy to risk. While updates from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center were posted in the lobby showing the wind speeds and projected path of the hurricane, the hotel staff were slow to react with a plan for the guests' safety. Initially, they distributed a letter asking the guests to bring outdoor furniture indoors, and suggesting that guests go shopping for emergency food, water, and supplies (but no help with transportation to do that). A second letter later offered recommendations to shelter in place (fill the bathtub with water, etc) for those who had room reservations, and the information that they were unable to extend the stays for those who were scheduled to check out. The front desk was not prepared with contingency options for those guests. When prompted, they first offered that there would be "shelters," but no specifics. Later they were able to suggest an alternate Marriott property with rooms available, but not to book them. If you are already familiar with the area, have a car, have your own excursions scheduled, and you are equipped for your own disaster preparedness, then this is a lovely home base. But this is not the place for a resort experience.

Our family stayed at this resort during a record rain fall in Kauai. However, we were still able to enjoy ourselves at the resort, and really want to go back when the sun is shining and things are a little drier. We are not owners, so we got the infamous parking lot/construction view. This was a little sad, and I think Marriott would do well to only offer these rooms when fully booked. Or better yet, work on making this view more pleasant. It doesn’t take much customer service to make a happy customer, and this would have gone a long way. The snorkeling was just okay on the beach. The view was lovely and the pools and spas were great as well. Overall, the resort and rooms were great and I would definitely stay here again.
