We loved Mazatlan, the people and the Costa De Oro. Maz is definitely not an Anglo tourist destination except for the cruisers that get dropped in for 6 hours every other day or so. We had a wonderful time interacting and watching the domestic folks enjoy their holidays, and the family bonds there seem so much stronger than our own. As to my title comment "Not Cabo" I refer to the overly touristic culture that has overtaken Baja as a whole. Nowhere in Mazatlan were we accosted or pushed to come in to a shop, stall to veiw or buy trinkets. In Cabo it is the national pastime. Maz is much more relaxed. It would be a very nice place to "ExPat" to. Costa De Oro is a really nice, but aging queen in need of some infrastucture work like elevator, water and electrical upgrades. It's people were fantastico and took very goo care of us at every turn and request. Would recommend the Costa De Oro in a heartbeat.

Cannot beat the location in the Zone Dorada and the views BUT don't expect luxury

Cannot beat the location in the Zone Dorada and the views! Grounds overall are well maintained for an aging hotel. Hot Tub is not "hot" - more like semi-warm water and kids are usually in there swimming when the temperature drops in the evening. The unit itself is really aged. Dead cockroaches in the cabinets and running around the kitchen area. AC unit is sufficient but VERY loud. Expect that everything in the unit will be soaked at all times - no insulation to keep out the moisture from the breeze and condensation builds up on everything (slipped and fell several times on the tile floors and had to put towels down everywhere to walk). Appliances work but are old. Sufficient pots and pans, but they are also well used. Definitely recommend you WASH anything before use - property maintenance came into the room and sprayed roach killer EVERYWHERE (including inside cabinets over all kitchen stuff and I suspect that is the same process that is done for any other unit). Pillows smell musty (the pillow cases are changed but the pillows themselves were never washed/replaced). Musty smell from the cabinetry is POWERFUL. Overall, don't expect luxury - head to El Cid or other resorts for that. BUT, if you want amazing views and to be in the middle of the action (meaning that you can expect to hear partying at pretty much ALL times of the day and everyday) and have everything within walking distance this is the place to stay.

The hotel is in a great location, you can take buses, taxis, uber just outside the hotel. Walk on the beach. Near to a lot of business. But it is a little dirty, a lot of black/green mold, too much noise, a lot of traffic pass by, nobody gives preference to the pedestrian.

Not my choice to stay here because I was traveling with a large group but it was ok for the price the rooms were clean and the staff was friendly but really slow I have family that has been going there for over 20 years so they had a favorite waitress by the pool to take care of us but she recently retired so I wouldn’t stay here again.
