Our experience at the Italian restaurant with Jose was our best dining experience at the resort. The service was excellent and everyone from our 12 year old daughter, to me and my husband had meals, desserts, and drinks that we enjoyed.

Sandos Playacar - July 2 - 8, 2020 THIS RESORT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR 3+ MONTHS, REOPENING JULY 1, 2020. DURING LOCKDOWN THERE WAS A LIMITED STAFF TO MAINTAIN GROUNDS AND ONSITE ANIMALS. Upon arrival to the resort, you are welcomed with a smile.. and a sanitizer ;-) they have a mat with black side & blue side, which you are asked to step on each (they are also at the restaurants). ALL resort workers are required to wear masks, except at certain times (the only one we say was 2 of the water aerobics instructors while they were in the water). There are bottles of hand-sanitizer at various places of the resort... bars, restaurants and lobby areas. Face masks for guests are NOT REQUIRED, but you are free to use them as you see fit. We noticed about 40% of guests wearing masks at various times during our stay. Lobby area is nice and open, as we arrived at resort appx 1500 on their SECOND day of opening, we walked directly to counter and presented our papers. ALL restaurants (including buffet) now require reservations. The website and some resort signage does not reflect this yet, but is required as part of Covid. The evening shows also require reservations as well. We were able to get ours for the remainder of the week, but the restaurant schedule for the following week was yet to be published so we had to come Monday morning for the last 2 days. Another Covid change - everything is going digital. The restaurant openings is listed on their website. For the 2nd week, it had not been updated by Tuesday morning, so they do need to improve on this part. ALL the restaurant menus will be online (except the buffet, which has none, and the Brazilian restaurant Fogo which also does not have one. This restaurant also does not appear on their website.) All activities for water and non, can also be found on their website. Familiarizing yourself with these ahead of time can be very helpful! There is also a resort map that can be very handy. They utilize golf shuttles throughout the resort, which is VERY spread out. The Lobby is at the farthest end from the beach. The Brazil, Steakhouse and Asian restaurants are located under the lobby. There are family rooms near the lobby, then the hacienda section which are 'houses' that have 8-10 rooms (2 floors) each with their own pool and hot tub. These can accommodate 5 guests/room. After these you get to the 'heart' of the resort, which is the outdoor theater for shows, spa, shops, teen area, kids area and 3 more restaurants (Gourmex, Italian and Festival Buffet) and much more. Located here also is the '2nd lobby' the Meeting Place. Guest services, Royal Elite Vacation Club, tours and the Premium Club (adults only) are located here. The adults only section of the resort is located near this area with it's own pool and bar (located near the French restaurant). Adjacent to this is the Royal Elite area which has a pool with nicer seating. From here there are more adults only housing and the adults only areas of the beach... some for Select, and others for Royal Elite. The beach area is VERY expansive, marred only by the seaweed, and the many empty chairs. Just down a little ways is the family area with housing, an infinity pool with swim up bar next to the children’s waterpark area. Immediately adjacent to that is another area just for Royal Elite family. The Ocean Cafe is located here for breakfast & lunch, with the Royal Elite restaurant located upstairs. There is also an exceptionally large section of family beach located here. The beach area is also home to the on-side dive shop and the water-sports with kayak, catamaran, jet ski, parasail and more. daily activities include bocce, volleyball and much more. ROOM - Select Superior. We were in room 1345, which faced the Meeting Place on one side... and the adults only pool with an ocean view on the other side. This was a PERFECT location with this large resort. The adults only pool was just outside our pool, with Wilbert the bartender doing a FANTASTIC job keeping us hydrated each day! The Festival, Gourmex, Italian and French restaurants were each within a 2-minute walk from our room. The beach itself, was a quick 4-minute walk. The entertainment venue, a 3-minute walk. The Spa was a 5-minute walk. The asian, brazilian and steakhouse, were a good 10-minute walk, or a quick shuttle ride if you like. Room itself had plenty of room. Standard bathroom with shower. Amazingly comfortable king-size bed. plenty of closet space and several drawers made it easy to not have to live out of a suitcase. Room entry is via your bracelet, which also works to lock/unlock the room safe. There is in-room bottled water (5 gallon) at room temperature. Ice bucket is available if needed. in-room mini-fridge stocked with soda & beer. There was also a bottle of wine and treats awaiting our arrival. Room DOES have a hair-dryer, and hand soap is available. Lotion, shower gel & shampoo are provided via dispensers. Few things which may/may not bother you... Tv is iffy... many channels in Spanish, and those in English reception can sometimes be not so good. Fan noise can be a little annoying. Adjusting temperature can be tricky. Patio door is VERY heavy. Lighting is an 'all or none' outside of the restroom. We did have a couple maintenance issues, which were resolved within MINUETS of calling to report them. POOL - we spent all our pool time at the adults only pool. it was quiet & relaxing, and during our stay the most crowded was 16 people including ourselves. The activities people were there to do a couple things during the day. There is music playing, but it is not loud or obnoxious. The bar is only steps away. The water temperature was extremely nice with several warm & cold spots throughout. Pool & beach towels are provided near the pool, and there was ample seating, most of which went unused. There is also a bathroom located in the same building as the bar/French restaurant. Few things which may/may not bother you... The water did not seem to be circulating during the day, so it did appear to have lots of particles floating within. Even though this was the adults only area, at least 1 time a family decided to use the pool with their child. reported to security who did NOT remove them, and activities even allowed them to participate in one of the games. there was not bar 'service', you had to walk over and order your own drinks. BEACH - Spent a few hours at the beach one day. We were the ONLY people in the adults only section. There were NO vendors like usual, peddling their wares along the beach. The beach did look 'unkept' appearing a bit 'dirty'. There was a 2-3 foot swath of seaweed, accompanied by a not-so-nice smell. A good part of the water closest to shore was very 'muddy' in appearance. I was told the resort removed the seaweed twice daily, but we did not see this. on our 5th day there, the 2-3 foot swath was now a 1-2 foot one so it did appear to be diminishing. There are several areas to choose from for seating, but many will be far away from any bars, as the usual beach bars were not open. there were daily beach/water activities available. DINING - there are MANY options available, unfortunately for now, not all are open. Menus are only available on mobile devices. BUFFETS - this has changed considerably. no more pans of food where you scoop what you want. Each serving is on a plate where you get what is presented. You may still get as much as you want, but it will be separate plates for each serving. At times your wait-staff will carry them for you, at other times, you do it yourself. BREAKFAST: Ocean front - Supposed to be adults only, but not operating as such at this time. Great location, nice breezes. The food area was rather small, but the first 2 days we had breakfast, it did not seem crowded. This is also a lunch area, which by the 2nd day was extremely crowded and loud. The food itself was similar to what is in festival buffet, just fewer options. Festival buffet - a VERY large area for seating, and food/juice options. Cupcake cafe - coffee shop with a selection of deserts & sandwiches. LUNCH: Same choices as breakfast. DINNER: For the most part, would rate the food at average. Heard similar from others. TO BE EXPECTED. Why? with just opening, they are getting back to 'work', and having to learn new methods with COVID restrictions, etc., We certainly did not go hungry (I KNOW we gained weight), but I am sure many may not be happy with the taste. The Fogo & Asiana definitely improved the quality on our final 2 nights. El Goucho - steakhouse. Average. Personally have had as good/better steaks on a cruise. Il Piemonte - Italian. Average. Enjoyable. Le Gourmet - French. Below Average. What French restaurant does not offer escargot? They did have French fries though! Gourmex - Mexican. Above Average. They did a great job of variety of dishes here. Asiana - Oriental. Above Average. Last evening, Spring rolls, sushi, and dinner itself were all on the better side of what we had experienced earlier. Can't beat the fried ice cream! Victor was an excellent server! Fogo de Janiero - Brazilian. Above Average. Have to rate this highest on the meats (the side dishes, not so much). a WIDE variety of choices, and very good tastes! Save room for the pineapple! Following were closed during our stay. Blue Moon Bar Chayita Riviera Blue Premium club Lobby BARS: Utilized La Bambola, Premium Select, Lobby Bar & Pool Bar. EXCELLENT service at each bar. One thing to note... NOT ALL BARS HAVE PREMIUM BRANDS! Your best bet? the PREMIUM CLUB MEETING POINT. NO STRAWS provided, so bringing your own cup/straw is always a plus! SPA: Went with a deep tissue massage. Advise only getting this is you LOVE TORTURE! For me, it was way too much. Wife had mani/pedi which was fine. Also had use of hydrotherapy which was very nice. STAFF: Masks... while they may be good and protective, I have to say... it GROSSLY detracts from their ability to do what they do best... and that is to SMILE and be welcoming to guests! for me, that SMILE was a big part of being at these resorts. The workers are always smiling and greeting, but now you get a greeting... but without seeing that smile, it is not the same. We had no problem with any staff. When considering overwhelming majority of them have NOT WORKED for 3+ months, and here they were on week 1, eager to please and serve! For many, it was their first days on the job! Victor at Asiana... Wilbert at pool bar. Luna at Festival. Rodrigo & Jasson at activities. There were so many more I did not get all the names, but I was so happy to be a part of their return to a normal life! ROOM SERVICE: available 24x7, limited selection (except for elite members). Prompt service makes for an easy meal in the room.
