Hotel Whitcomb Still Dated And Lacks Good Maintenance

I've been here one time before and my experience was only about average. I thought since the neighborhood was rapidly gentrifying, maybe the hotel would have been refurbished. So I took a chance and was not happy. The heater/air blower in my room was kaput! And I just don't mean malfunctioning. I mean completely out of business. While San Francisco generally doesn't get stifling hot to need to use the cooling system, you can sure bet you'll need the heater's warmth for the cooler nights and early morning wake ups. And the ice vending complex, near the elevator on each floor, was in a stage of being repaired. But never was completed during my stay. So I had to travel one floor up or down for snacks, ice, and beverages. This was not particularly a problem except that the stairways are awkwardly aligned and stepping down without caution might cause you to tumble. My room lighting was somewhat dim and the lamp switches seemed all too fragile. Location is still top notch for the opera, Asian Art Museum, the symphony, civic auditorium, city hall, and pop theater like Hamilton. MUNI/BART just steps from the door.

Best place to stay after the Orpheum theater

Great location - right across the street from BART and the Orpheum. It is in remarkably good shape for its age, but it has some of what you might expect: single pain windows that don't block noise well, noisy window AC/heaters, carpet in need of re-stretching. I booked through, and the hotel was going to charge a higher rate, but they corrected it when I asked. Be aware of their "resort" fee - $35 - without any resort type amenities. A good option if you need something close to the theater, civic center, or Hastings law school. But not many good restaurants close by, not especially close to the usual tourist stuff.

We only stayed a couple of nights but the rooms were comfortable and the staff very helpful and attentive. An older hotel with charm and character. Interesting place to stay in San Fran and at a good price too.

    Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke-filled room and "resort" fee amounts to $35 per day just for a bottle of water and generally disappointing customer service. First day we stayed somewhere else and came back to a room smelling like the staff used it as a lounge. Second day took 30 minutes in a sweltering room to get the air conditioner to work.

What a majestic building the Whitcomb is and it has so much character. Where do you start is the big question .... If you are use to a Intercontinental or a SOFITEL then this is probably not the hotel for you. Check-in was great service with no problems leaving the luggage until we were able to check in. Rooms were clean, plus of a good size with all the amenities that you would expect in a majestic building like this. Very well maintained and the character of the rooms was lovely. The hotel had great location to market street and yes it is in the less desirable area of SF, just stay focused and you will be fine. Valerie for money was fine and the service from all staff were excellent and we would stay here again.
