Just returned from Maho Sonesta beach resort. We were welcomed with a refreshing drink. Check in was quick and easy. Our rooms were ready and since many were checking in at the same time there was a line up for the elevators. This was the only time we waited as every other time the elevators were quick. The room was exactly as booked...clean, well stocked and the air con perfect. We had no trouble booking our specialty dinners on the kiosk in the lobby. We enjoyed the Point and ate there twice....excellent food and friendly service. The Lava Rock dinner was also amazing and fun....again friendly and good service. Our big disappointment was Jing’s oriental dinner. Not a welcoming atmosphere nor friendly staff. The food was bland and in my chicken and shrimp chow main I had a few tiny tiny pieces of chicken and2 small shrimp and very little sauce. The breakfast and lunch at the buffet were good...many choices and food was replenished often . Found the service was very friendly...smiling faces always..Although they did not have a hundred choices...what they had was tasty, and fresh. Now for my concerns.....we had a problem with our shower..1st cold....2nd day warm....then barely warm...and back to cold. I am sure this is a problem they will correct. We could never enjoy our balcony....we were above 2 huge fans that created so much noise that we could not have a conversation and the smell was awful and they need to correct this problem.

    Brand new resort but boring

Just got back from the Sonesta Maho last night. The resort is less than 5 minutes drive from the airport. The hotel is brand new and design is great. Our room was on the 7th floor facing Mullet Bay. The view was amazing...except for what I can only describe and the waste processing plant right below us. The overwhelming smell of feces was too much and we couldn't enjoy the balcony, which was a real shame as we would of been able to view some amazing sunsets from there. The buffet was very sparse there was maybe 8 things to choose from. There was no ice cream at the buffet. Breakfast there was melon and watermelon most days and again about 8 things to choose from along with a omelet and egg station. We took a little trip into Philipsburg for some shopping. It was $20 US each way by taxi. You can also take the public bus which is $2. We booked with Sunwing and did a day trip to St.Barths. They did state that it is low season and some shops may not be open but we could relax on Shell Beach. The catamaran was great. They did state the waves are a bit rough going to St.Barths. I had read reviews before that said you can take the ferry but it is nicknamed the vomit comet, they weren't kidding. Even on the catamaran people were getting sea sick. Once in St.Barths all the shops were basically closed. We walked to Shell beach which was beautiful but all the places around it were closed and there was no shade so we couldn't relax on the beach. We ended up sitting under a gazebo at the marina for the 2 hours as there was nothing to do. Back on the catamaran we sailed to a nature reserve where we anchored and snorkeled and had lunch. I swam with 2 sea turtles which was amazing!! Lunch on the boat was good. They put up the sail and we cruised the water back to St. Maarten for about an hour, everyone fell asleep as it was boring. The trip was expensive as it was $180 US pp plus a $20 US entry fee. I would of preferred to go to Anguilla which is closer and has snorkeling and it's a beach day. Overall the island of St.Maarten is beautiful and is definitely coming back after Irma. I just hope the resort makes some changes as it was quiet boring, I'd love to come back but maybe I'll rent a villa next time.

Everything was in close proximity of each other, the food wasn’t OMG, but definitely doable, the ascot pub and the point were my two favorites... the staff is adhering to your needs. I enjoyed my 5 day stay, i literally have no complaints whatsoever

Nice way to spend your day

We were on a cruise and decided to get a resort for a day pass here. And it was definitely a good decision. We laid on the beach and watched the planes land. We did some activities and we ate there and what a beautiful view. I can’t wait to go back

After reading some of the reviews before we left I was a little apprehensive about what experience we would get. We actually were in Sint-Maarten April 2018 and if you had seen the devastation from Irma that hotel was completely gutted down to the 1st floor. I was impressed with a lot of things and underwhelmed in others. Keep in mind we were there in the off-season. I read the elevators were slow. The only time I ever waited was when a large group got checked in at the same time and there was about 50 people trying to get to their room. That’s understandable and expected. I waited 5-6 minutes and I could have taken the stairs. The remodel was done exceptionally well. Lots of modern amenities. I would suggest ocean view. We had no problems finding drinks. Read a lot of criticism about the food/options etc.. there are really 2 options for breakfast. The cafe for a danish or apple and coffee or sit down buffet which had 2 omelet stations, fresh fruit, sausage, bacon, potatoes and much more. We had no problems getting a seat but we were usually sitting at 730/8 am all mornings. What happens later?? For lunch there is a buffet view ate at the palms grill everyday as their menu features curry chicken that was very good, fresh mahi, jerk chicken and fresh vegetables. You can get sandwiches if you wanted as well. It was that good. Dinner options were lava rock cookout at the palms grill where you cooked your own food on a lava rock. It was fun but you have to be careful to make sure you cook your food all the way through. I can see how people post about getting sick during their stay but it’s not the resorts fault. No one in our party of 9 got sick. The point is Italian and the chicken parmigiana was excellent. The jing was excellent as well. My only complaint and it’s not really a complaint is they want you to book all your reservations at their kiosk but it will tell you they are booked or you can’t get in. The reservation system could be a lot less stressful for all. We walked into the jing with no reservation at 630 and they seated us. Very nice. Stay away from the Mexican restaurant next door. Terrible. Overall we had a wonderful time
