My best friend and I travelled to Blau as our first ever trip to Cuba. We booked separate rooms with an ocean view but with a request to put the rooms closer together. We arrived at the hotel and we were two doors down from each other in our ocean view rooms on the 5th floor. I think the ocean view would have been better if you were higher up, if that's extremely important to you. The rooms were clean and the air conditioners worked, mattresses and bedding were comfortable. My fridge was always stocked with water, beer and cola. Staff is amazing! Everyone was so friendly and they took the time to remember your favourite drink was and where you like to sit in the dining areas. Food was fine, there was more than enough variety to keep you full. Yes, there's quite a bit of repetition with some of the foods but I find that pretty typical of resorts. We tried out both the italian and international a la carte restaurants. The italian was probably our favourite. Swimming was amazing! We didn't set foot in the pool although it looked nice when we walked by it to the ocean each day. The beach was clean, sand was white and soft. I am not a strong swimmer, but even on the windy days swimming in the ocean was safe during our visit. The water was stunning and luckily for us was pretty shallow for quite a ways out. There were plenty of chairs on the beach but we liked a particular area down at the end of the beach so one of us would secure a couple of chairs early in the am while we were sipping coffee on the beach. One morning i was happy to sit on my sarong in the sand when one of the staff who was cleaning the chairs, insisted I sit in a chair instead of down on the sand. There was always a show or some sort of entertainment going on at night in the resort. If you hit the sheets early you may want to ask for a room higher up. On the 5th floor we could easily hear the music until it was turned off at 11:00 pm. We converted our money as we needed it and it was easy to do this at the front desk. We just forgot to convert it back before we checked in at the airport. Oops. Luckily we didn't have too many CUC's left. We really enjoyed our experience and would come back again.

We are just back after a two week holiday, on arrival we were told that our booking had been cancelled by TUI even though TUI had transferred us from the airport to the hotel, we were told we would have to pay to stay, we refused to pay, we were asked to take a seat, after they rang the TUI rep we were shown to our room by a very lovely and helpful porter. On our last day we needed the doctor for a horrid case of d and v, Boris the doctor was very good and gave me an injection and medication, what they didn’t say was the bill had to be paid in cash, we went to reception to get some cash on our card, the receptionist just said no, she said we had to go into town, we explained that we were about to check out, she said no again and walked away......the reception staff were not helpful at all. The hotel itself is lovely and the beach is beautiful, the waiters and cleaners are always smiling and very helpful. It is about a two hour drive from Havana airport. Before you leave the island you have to change any Cuban money back, after checking in but before going through security, beware though, if you want to buy a bottle of water before boarding the plane you cannot use sterling.

    As good as it gets

Unless you are into historic hotels in Havana this multi level modern hotel is as good as it gets in Cuba . Small defects in the room are repaired next day once reported. Rooms are large and clean with excellent air conditioning The atrium of the hotel has rooms facing an open area with 50 foot hanging vines in the middle . If you are not the type to go to bed late get a room at least 8th floor or higher as there can be a noise issue up till about 11:00 pm I was on the 4th floor and this was only one floor over the piano bar Note only one side of the elevators serves this floor check before dragging your bags Advantage of lower floors give you the stairs instead of waiting for the glass elevators. Buffet food was typical of most all inclusive hotels but with artistic presentation The International restaurant on site is a must and possibly had one of the best meals I have had in my 36 trips to Cuba . The string quartet could have been in any hall in Canada or the US they were that good Beach was fantastic as always . If you are in snorkeling check on the 39 CUC trip sold on site great reef and swimming in a cave Staff as almost always in Cuba are very helpful and friendly . Remember to bring some giveaways . Toothpaste is always a shortage in Cuba. Government has to improve immigration procedures exiting the country min 1 hour in line up and even delaying flights waiting for passenger Do not cash more of your currency than you need . New regulations do not allow any CUC to leave the country and the give you a ridiculous exchange rate at the airport (1 CUC costs $1.60 CDN exchange at airport ! CUC gives you $1.00 CDN ) Cuba must improve system to keep tourists . The people are fantastic but bureaucracy is not ion

Booked last minute for stay at the beginning of January. Weather was warm, but not hot, which is typical for this time of year. Beach was fantastic, Room with ocean view was perfect, nice pool, food was pretty good overall. The music all over the resort was pretty much constant and it was amazing! Many talented musicians for sure. Loved watching the staff dancing around in the lunch buffet. Be kind to the staff. They are really lovely, amazing people who do their absolute best with what they have to work with. We had a great week and will return!

    Wonderful hotel with amazing entertainment.

Myself and 3 friends stayed at the Blau Varadero as part of a Virgin Holiday package with 4 nights in Havana and 7 nights in Varadero. We had two twin rooms with queen size beds that were extremely comfortable. Our rooms were newly renovated and incredibly bright, colourful and clean. The maids did an excellent job everyday at refreshing the rooms and we loved coming back to find the curtains tied in a bow and the towels arranged as boats or birds. The buffet offered a good selection with freshly grilled fish, shrimp and meets on offer everyday day amongst other things. The two a-la-cart restaurants (Italian and International) made a nice change from the buffet although my friend who is gluten free struggled to find a main course she could eat at the Italian (she was fine everywhere else in the hotel). The pool at the Blau was a fantastic place to spend time, the animation team had activities going on including aqua Zumba (both in the pool and in the sea), water pollo, yoga, salsa, games but all were completed down one end of the resort and Never felt intrusive. Unlike other hotels I have stayed out there was no pressure to join in. The entertainment at the Blau is amongst the best I have seen. There is a nightly show either in the theatre room or by the pool. The music shows are completely live (no miming!) and definitely check out the circus and magic shows, we loved these. Music is very important in Cuba and the Blau embraces this. As well as the shows there is a piano bar, live music in the lobby bar, a string quartet in the International restaurant, and a live band at the lunch buffet. There is also a table magician walking around the bars whose tricks are well worth a tip. Everyone at the Blau works extremely hard and everyone we encountered was friendly, went out of their way to talk to and help us and there was a sense that the staff enjoy working at the hotel that was lovely to see. Top tips: You can use both American and European style plug adaptors at the hotel. Definitely check out the outside bar to the left of the swimming pool (facing away from the hotel), this is a lovely space for sitting out in the evening with comfortable chairs and table service. We were always looked after there by the lovely waitress. I would stay at the Blau again in a heartbeat.
