We love Cuba, especially the people, and have been there 6 times trying different resorts each time for the experience, and will continue to go again. However, we would never go back to Muthu Playa Varadero unless some major improvements are made to the rooms and their service. This resort apparently was under new management as our travel agent informed us. So we went with an open mind as we do understand that everyone has different expectations. Yes, we do pay more travelling from western Canada than our eastern Canadian travellers do to fly to Cuba. Our room on the ground floor was definitely a 3 star, if that, as is most of the rooms in this aged small resort. It had 2 single beds, no telephone, no remote, small TV with bad reception. Even though people don't intend to stay in their room while vacationing, it's about having choices. On our request they did show us another room on the third floor but there was hardly any improvement so we decided just to stay where we were. They had to spray our room more than once during our stay due to few bugs and a couple of cockroaches. At least our maid was good, and every time we visit Cuba or Mexico, and by leaving them a tip or other goods each day, they will do their best to show their appreciation. It means a lot to them and it's nothing for us to show our appreciation as well. You will be surprised to find few English speaking tourists at this resort, as the majority of them come from Russia, mostly in groups and unfortunately most are loud and rude, and fill their plates sky high at the buffet. Good thing the food is plentiful and it was always a pleasure to have Danita and Lester serve our table there. If you're still hungry, there's a 24 hour snack bar by the pool. But try not to get a room on the ground floor close to it or people who enjoy late snacks and drinks will keep you up during the night. We were allowed to make more than one reservation at the speciality restaurants so try to book early. The Rancon restaurant by the beach is open for lunch from 12 to 3, with barbecue chicken and ribs, and very good. Nightly entertainment every night starts at 10 pm for about an hour. You will hear it some nights from your room as this is a very small resort. Wi-Fi is available only in the lobby and for 1 peso, you can get l free hour, but it's not always that good. The Bar Cafe in the lobby is very popular serving delicious lattes, Spanish coffees, espresso and great service from Diego, Anise and Reneen. The beach had white soft sand, but it was very crowded, sometimes making it hard to find chairs. This seems to be the case as well in the pool area where people will claim their chair with a towel, then leave and come back 2 hours later. One thing we observed during our stay is that the service is very inconsistent. However, we understand if you are a repeated customer, they will treat you very well. We met a couple at one of the specialty restaurants and they'd be travelling to this resort for over 20 years! They were sitting at a table next to us and were dining on lobster tails which was not on the same menu as the rest of us. Well, to conclude, through our experience that we will not be indulging in any lobster feast, at least not at this resort.

We talked about going to Cuba for a few years, so we did it this year. People told us that the food was not great, but they estimated how bad it was. We were there for 1 week and had only 1 descent meal. The only good thing we found that was good was the bread & buns. We took an 11 hour tour to Havana which was the best part of the trip. We did not find the Cubans as being friendly like people told us they would be. The only 1 we found to be happy to see us or even friendly was our maid and she was awesome. I would not recommend this hotel. Our next trip will be back to Mexico.

My first trip to Cuba... but not my last. But this is the place I will be coming to.

We'll definitely be coming back. My wife had been there once before and she insisted on coming back... so we did. I was not sorry. It was late when we arrived, so we dropped our bags in our rooms and headed to the snack bar at the pool and ate a burger and had a couple of drinks... most of the people who complain about service obviously don't take care of the staff. We made some friends over the course of two weeks and because we were friendly and showed appreciation for their efforts (they work incredibly hard to make us happy) we made a few friends, I believe... I know one - Odalys - remembered my wife from last year. She was so happy to meet us. Really liked the food in the 1887 restaurant, and the buffets were always good - especially when they served mussels... I hadn't had them for decades and devoured as many as I could (while saving some for others...) There was something there for everyone. I would always get a couple of their delicious rolls and meat and cheese and make sandwiches at lunch... The coffee bar was fantastic... my first time having Cuban coffee. Can't get that here...espresso is not the same (different beans, different roast.) Even managed to get a taxi to take us to Havana on a tour... wonderful time. And your beach is absolutely beautiful... the hotel bar - we had a regular table where I could write and have a drink or so... the crew there made it great. never had to explain what I wanted twice. Lastly, our rooms were nice. There was a blown light in one bathroom, but otherwise all good. And we always had water and coffee waiting when we came back from housecleaning. Those girls work hard. Thank you for taking the regular world away and making life for us special and stress free. We will be back.

We were a large group of 25 people who were booked on the same flight and at the Muthu MGM Playa Varadero from March 6-13, 2020. Some of us were family who stuck together and on occasion we ate out together at the ala cartes, etc. I tell about my trips like it is and don't care what other people say about the resorts I stay at, they have no influence on me. First of all I want to address the things I liked about the Muthu. I arrived sick, not with the Corona Virus, but a cold that started on Day 1. I tried all week to get better, but the cold really hit hardest when I got back. Feeling crappy and taking away my energy I made the best of it. Those stairs up to the buffet (all 14 steps) took all my energy and walking around to take the ramp up from the wrong direction was not an option. First of all the resort was very very clean. There were staff constantly walking around cleaning things up. Even though I don't use pools, I saw they were very clean since I watched the grandkids swim and enjoy their time. The path to the beach was clean, the area that belonged to the Muthu on the beach was clean and having been there at sundown when most activity was done, staff had stacked the plentiful chairs and cleaned the sand from tourist debris to be ready for the next day. The dining room was very clean as well and felt welcoming. There was PLENTY of food choices and having been to a different resort last year, they had twice as big a buffet, twice the food choices and it was tasty. Roasted chicken, roast beef, roast pork, fresh breads, hot drinks or cold, plenty of salads and desserts and more than two areas where you could choose your food, pasta, or breakfast omelettes with garnish, they were ready to serve. There was no need to go hungry and if you did, its your picky palette fault. They do their best to please and always ready to bring drinks to your table as soon as you walk in. I found our first night room dreadful. It smelled of mold and was just outright nasty, even the blankets and pillows smelled. Why would they even put us in a room like that, then move us the next day. So moving us was a nice idea, to a suite that had the shower UPSTAIRS only. Being handicapped and I don't do stairs I only enjoyed a shower twice in the 7 days I was there due to the cumbersom stairs and feeling like I might fall. The room was stuffed with so many pieces of rattan furniture you couldn't get another piece in. The jacuzzi didn't work for my daughter and family, but the privacy was nice. I never did get to see over the balcony to look outside, on the pool side. More steps, no rails. Some of the best places to eat were the Eldorado Buffet, always guaranteed a nice meal 3x a day. The pool bar where you got a hamburger or hotdog with 3 fries if you were lucky. The drinks were OK, the staff OK too. The coffee bar in the lobby had the BEST coffee and friendly atmosphere, it wasn't a JOB to get me an Americano coffee. The front lobby was a pleasant atmosphere with white leather couches and chair for comfort, glass topped tables which were cleaned and wiped very often and it was a nice place to sit and people watch or wait for family to come join us. For places to eat, there was Varadero 60 which I never tried. The Ranchon la Coleta. Well this is where we enjoyed a lovely lunch on one of our afternoons, and booked our a la carte for one of our evenings. Because we were a large group of 11 they wanted us to choose one item from the menu, which we did, and chose chicken. We got a big chicken thigh, not my faorite part of a chicken meal, since its dark meat, some kind of salad that we didn't know how to eat and rice. During the meal, my daughter pointed to the roof of the building and there were rats playing and running from place to place in the rafters. No sooner did we see them there, than one fell on one of the girls in our party and I heard one of our guys yell and it scurried across the floor. Hence the title of this review "Oh Rats". When my daughter spoke to the manager the next day, they closed the building for one or two days and said they would take care of the problem. Obviously they knew about them!! We did notice some repairs being done to the roof, whether they fumigated or not we never knew, and they reopened. Never again!! I know its Cuba, but honestly during our a la carte!! You pay for Wifi, $1 cuc for one hour IF you can get connected. And if you get connected and forget to shut it off, it will use up and you pay again. In my week I used 5 Wifi cards just to Facetime my husband a couple times a day at home and see the pets. Taxis were at the ready to take you downtown. On one occasion the lobby man took us on a huge golf cart down to the highway to take a bus to downtown. Turns out we hired cars instead and went to Al Capone's house which was a lovely view on the ocean and the greatest Pina Colada. Then we took a horse and buggy and wanted to stop at Josone Park for supper at the Wine Cave. Well watch those buggy drivers, they scammed us both years. They said yes to taking us for $10 cuc, then when we got to Josone we had to pay $10 EACH and he pointed to the price on the buggy, so don't trust them, they lie, then get you later. Just so you know its 10cuc EACH person. We took the catamaran ride to Cayo Blanco and had a wonderful meal of lobster waiting as we arrived. During the trip there they stopped for people who wanted to snorkel and look around in the ocean. If it weren't from the young drunks that thought they owned the boat, it was a most enjoyable day. We had no problem getting towels in our room, in fact several times we were handed a whole stack of towels since there were 5 of us in the suite. Huge bottles of water were left every single day and by the end of 7 days we had three leftover. Coffee was not replaced and no cream and sugars, so I took from the buffet and used those. When I asked for coffee replacements I was given one. When I wanted tea, I used the bags from the buffet which I took from there. I would not go back again due to the stairs at this resort, but because I also wasn't feeling well I might have had an easier time using them.

we have travelled to Varadaro for the last 4 years and have finally found our Hotel!! not ony is the beach exeptional, that is expected, the staff, the food, the atmosphere is amazing. From the coffee bar and the fantastic service from Anay to Pablo the man not only in charge of quality control and service, but also a wedding planner the staff will do whatever they can to make your stay the best it can be. The food at this resort was outstanding, the choices endless!!!! There was something for everyone. The flavors where fantastic and so fresh!!! We are not ones to use the pool but prefer the beach, however we found that we actually enjoyed this pool as well. That was a first. It was not our intent to plan our wedding at this resort, however once we were there for a few days it became clear that this was the ONLY place to have our wedding next year. We will never go anywhere else and after searching for 4 years it feels great to have found what we feel is the best that there is !! Can't wait to go back and bring family and friends with us to enjoy and experience this fantastic resort! Heidi & Brad
