Mexico Caribbean

Known for its beautiful beaches, vast selection of resorts, Mayan history and spring break parties, Mexico is a Caribbean destination with attractions and activities for every budget. Visitors can explore archeological ruins, go scuba diving at some of the world's best coral reefs and dance into the wee hours of the morning.

As the Caribbean's largest tourism and resort centre, the city of Cancun has undergone a complete transformation since its days as a relatively deserted island in the 1950s. Today, Cancun has a population of over 700,000 and millions more flock to its many resorts and beaches annually. With more than 250 days of sun per year combined with hotels, restaurants, shopping and nightlife to suit any budget, it's not hard to see why!

In Cancun, you can easily relax on the beach in the morning, try snorkeling in the afternoon and head out to lively nightclubs in the evening. Venture downtown to the Ciudad Cancun area or stay close and visit the restaurants and bars located right in the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone).

To the south of Cancun is the beautiful Riviera Maya (also called the Mayan Riviera). Here, you'll find the world's second largest coral reef and more than 200 kilometres of picturesque beach stretching along the Caribbean Sea. But it's the underground caves, eco-parks and archaeological sites filled with ancient Mayan artifacts that make the Riviera Maya so unique. Even travellers staying in Cancun often make the two-hour drive to the municipality of Tulum to spend a day exploring the well-known El Castillo castle and other ruins.

Located about 19 km off the eastern shoreline of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the island of Cozumel is a relaxed vacation spot perfect for couples and honeymooners looking to escape the spring break crowd. This romantic island is the perfect place to relax in a beachside cabana, try windsurfing or go diving at some of the world's most beautiful reefs.

West of Cancun on the opposite side of the Yucatan Peninsula lies the city of Merida. Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan and showcases traits from its Mayan history. Today the city is a rich cultural and historical hub, and provides a laid-back alternative to the action of Cancun.
