Disappointing but town and employees awesome!!

Sandra W (Vancouver, Canada) on Jan 30, 2023

I really hate to give a bad review for this “resort” because everyone who works here are truly amazing! Very friendly and always smiling! BUT this resort is the oddest one I’ve ever been to. I don’t understand why anyone recommends staying in building 4, calling these superior rooms, because they absolutely are not. They are old and gross. Definitely need repairs and paint jobs. Also saying it’s quieter? We could hear street traffic! Definitely not what I want to hear when on a Mexican vacay! The pool is pointless - it’s ice cold so can’t use it. You have to cross the street to go to the buffet, the ocean, the drink bars and pools that you can actually swim in. We changed rooms 4 times before we found one that was tolerable. I have never ever had this experience anywhere I have stayed whether it was a resort or a hotel (and I’ve been to quiet a few). The buffet is very small and the food options limited and to be honest, not very good at all. Breakfast was always great - omelette bar and lots of fruit. The coffee was horrible and the juices were so watered down it was hard to tell what it was supposed to be. There was one green juice (celery, pineapple and parsley) which was very good and refreshing. I know most resorts can have rather bland food but this was pretty horrible. There are only 2 a la cartes but the online way of booking doesn’t work and when you ask reception they will tell you “it’s booked, no more room” for both places. We had to get the manager and he was able to get us reservations for both places so not sure why they always say “it’s full” when it clearly wasn’t. They weren’t worth the hassle anyway, better to eat in town, lots of great food and options. We talked to lots of people who have said they had been many times before Covid and were very disappointed after returning this time and that they would not be back. Thank goodness for the town this resort is in. It was lovely and food in the restaurants around town was amazing! Wanda’s burgers and ribs super awesome! The Thursday market was great and we had lunch at Aloha restaurant - also amazing food. The town and all the amazing people we talked with (both employees and other travellers) definitely made up for the apparent downfall of this resort. We did have a great vacay - luckily. Decameron los cocos - if you fix up the rooms, increase the buffet size with more options and better food this could be an awesome place. Until then - this is most definitely not a great place. Definitely would never recommend. Like I said, I do hate giving bad reviews but people need to know.

Went down hill big time

JefeArdrossanAB (Ardrossan, Canada) on Jan 16, 2023

This was our 5th trip to Los Cocos over the years. We had not been back for 3 years due to covid. The resort unfortunately has gone down hill and we wont return. Here is a bit of the good and bad. The good. The staff are absolutely fantastic so helpful and always happy. The rooms were clean and bed sheets changed out. I like the size of the resort with the park and very easy to go pick up stuff at the store and central to everything. Again I like the resort but to many changes not for the good. The bad. *We were up on the hill again in building 4. We always had our breakfast there in the restaurant, was a nice quiet start to have a coffee and relax. This year its closed. Not a huge deal to go down to the big buffet but was disappointed. *The pool was sooooo cold you could not go in it. Not even a toe. *Ran out of towels up at the pool lots of times *The bar would close up top at 3:30-4PM. If you wanted something you had to go all the way to the beach bar, for ice or anything. Real handy. *The taps in the room were falling off the counter at the sink *Little or no water pressure in the room, hot water maybe depends on the day *Balcony railing falling apart all rusty and not to safe *Bathrooms around resort closed off and on due to plumbing issues *Closed down the big buffet are half way threw our stay so cram everyone into the snack area. So congested and lined right up *The food. It was slop. Horrible and cold. I eat anything but cant live on that stuff so we ate out lots. Kind of why you stay all inclusive to save a bit of cash for food. There was no fruit variety same everyday and night. I grabbed a orange one night for a treat and it was plastic?? Really fruit is worth nothing there. I went and bought some for my room. *No more themed dinners. Loved Mexican night Anyway had a good holiday and made the best of the hotel. Went fishing was incredible and the beach is wonderful. Its really to bad how the resort has gone down hill to the point in my mind of no return. We will rent a VRBO or something lots available in the area. I'm not going to quit going to the area but Los Cocos is done for us. A real shame used to love it there.

Fun but could have been better

Diana S on Jan 08, 2023

The bad. The pictures are deceiving. The beach was very small. The staff were as friendly as possible but only a very few spoke english. It was difficult to speak to front desk etc for information. There was no Air transat representative available at all the whole week. She got us on the correct bus and never heard from her again. When we called I got a voicemail and call was not returned. It appears from other Canadians that it has changed severely since Covid. They were also unhappy and were return customers. We were told to bring US funds which they did not want. Canadian or Pesos only. The good. We met Salvidore who is on the beach who spoke great english. He took us whale watching and snorkelng and into town for a walking tour. The bars had both local and international drinks, some staff made them different than others but all were good. The food was great, Fionna made our day and breakfast every morning with a smile and a song. An excellent party for New Years Eve including fireworks and chinese lanterns let off on the beach. It was a very safe and friendly atmosphere despite the language barrier. Our room was cleaned daily with fresh towels every day. Overall we had a great time however, I probably would not return.

Beautiful Rincon De Guayabitos

Kathy B (Calgary, Canada) on Jan 06, 2023

My husband and I recently went on an Air Canada vacation package to the Royal Decameron La Cocos in the beautiful Rincon De Guayabitos, north of Puerto Vallarta. We were able to stay at one resort and play at all 3 local Decameron properties. All 3 were priced the same but we chose the larger of the 3 the La Cocos and although we loved the location on this beautiful bay found we spent more time at the Decameron La Marina a few doors down on the beach. La Cocos is the older of the properties and was extremely busy with families from Guadalajara vacationing at the same time which was great for a more true Mexican feel but found that the beach chairs and buffet was at many times over crowded and so utilized the sister property often as it seemed a bit quieter and easier to access some meals, snacks and drinks than at La Cocos. There was limited to no entertainment at our hotel either but found the Kokomo bar at La Marina had some entertainment as well as the most personal and professional bartender named Osciel that made wonderful drinks and made us feel so welcome! The food at the resort was not really to the standard we thought it would be, especially the snacks of which hot dogs were most present even as pizza toppings (pizza was really not good) but the Mexican dishes were very tasty. There was some mix ups with the al a carte restaurants for us and several other travellers who booked but then were turned away when they couldn't find our reservations so only visited the steak house one night which was good but the balance was at the buffet. The La Marina is a newer hotel, with nicer looking rooms and the food was good and the Kokomo bar with Osciel was great!
