Not a Luxury Resort. Bad food, bad food service, bungalows need repair. Diamond club staff and butlers were great.
Tracy R on Apr 25, 2025
I had a hard time coming up with a numerical rating. The butlers, cabana staff and Diamond Club personnel were wonderful. The beach is beautiful. That's the extent of the positives I can express. We splurged on an overwater bungalow. The 2 bungalows next to us where being updated, so there was some construction noise, but no big deal. There was chilled prosecco and fruit in our bungalow on arrival. But... there are no lights under the glass floor. We had really looked forward to watching the fish swimming up to the lights at night :-( The shutters in the bathroom didn't close (!). We mentioned it, and housekeeping just placed rolled up towels there at night during turn down service. That's a place where privacy is necessary! The hammock was so saggy we couldn't get in and out, and the plunge pool is not heated. Great if you visit in July, but in February, not so much. Plunge pool also needed some repairs - broken tiles, rust stains, etc. With exception of the steak house, EVERY meal we had was cold or lukewarm. The servers in the restaurants give off the vibe that they don't want to be there, and serving you is an annoyance. I had to ask FOUR times for hot water for my tea. I understand now that there had been a workers strike in December, so maybe it's bad mgmt and conditions, but that's not our fault. Service was slow and inattentive. Service at the steakhouse was better, but the food, though warm, was mediocre. Every restaurant is out of many things on the menu. OK, I get it, it's an island so maybe they can't always get everything. But this wasn't mentioned by servers until your food was brought to you with half of what you ordered missing! Would be nice to know in advance, so you have the chance to order something else. We decided to try the buffet, and the servers attitudes were literally rude. We tried to go for lunch, but were too late. Someone actually closed the door in our faces and said, "We're closed!" The next morning, the server complained when I ordered decaf coffee, because she'd have to go next door to the cafe to pick it up. The biggest surprise was that the pictures imply that the entire beautiful crescent beach is part of the resort. Less than half is, and on the other half, tourist boats pull up and there is a jet ski rental. When you stay in the bungalows, the jet skis like to come right up to your dock to gawk. They were even snapping photos, and one person was shooting a video. We didn't go there to help people get more tiktok views! Our stay included an hour in the hydro therapy spa. We asked 3 people for directions, and the first 2 told us wrong. We missed the first 15 minutes of our appointment. The spa attendant took us back to the hydro spa, showed us the locker rooms and said that you can't use the robes or lockers unless you've booked a service. But she neglected to tell us to bring towels from the locker room, as there are none anywhere in the hydro spa. The cabana was nice, although several were under repair and unavailable. Cabana server was wonderful and the barbeque chicken, potatoes and salad for lunch was the best meal we had there! The pool area has a loud DJ playing 70s and 80s dance music. That's fine if that's your vibe, but when you bill yourself as a "luxury resort," that's not what people who book there are looking for. We did go to the Diamond Lounge Concierge to explain our displeasure, and they were very helpful and tried hard to turn things around for us. Our butlers, Earl and Zo, were amazing and you could see they truly felt bad about the experience we were having. I felt like this resort doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it party resort, family resort or luxury resort? You can't do all 3 successfully. I spoke with the couple in the cabana next to us, and they had booked a pool room. When they arrived, they were told that room was unavailable, and were put on the ground floor in the back, looking at the dumpster. I think there are people that work here that really want to create a great experience, but many who just don't care and don't try. I'm incredulous that Marriott would classify this as an "Autograph Collection." That denotes a certain level of luxury and refinement, and this resort was not that.
Moldy smell
Tonia C on Apr 25, 2025
The room had an extreme mold smell that impacted the quality of the air. The first night after napping in the room, I went to dinner and had my first nose bleed ever. The next day we went on an excursion and I was fine until I went to the room and slept and my nose bled again. The concierge desk called to touch base and she recommended I change rooms or have house keeping freshen the room. I advise my sister already changed rooms so that does not help and you can’t “freshen” mold. Three nose bleeds later , I am home and breathing better! The service at the buffet was horrible. The waiters barely want to bring drinks. It was a very disappointing and traumatic experience. Especially since this is a Marriott resort and my expectations were so much higher.
