This is an amazing location and the staff is what makes this place an excellent choice. From when I arrived and met Mohammed in valet to check-in with Lia and the concierge help from Sarah & Rory was just amazing. Rory took out his time to explain the package deals and booked it and made sure it all was convenient for our family. Have stayed in many fairmont properties but by far this one is the best primarily because of the staff. Thank you to the whole Banff crew for making this trip excellent and thank you for the lovely welcome gift.
Unfortunate changes in service on the Gold Level.
Jul 28, 2021
We have stayed on the Gold Level several times and it has always been the epitome of service and value. Sadly, this has changed.
The Gold Level Rooms include breakfast served in the Lounge as well as appetizers from 4-6pm also in the lounge. The pandemic has changed all these from buffet to table service, and this has been well adapted in the past.
The food has suffered a noticeable decline in quality and the service has dropped even further. In all our visits to the lounge this trip, we were forgotten all but once. (Thank you Emmet, you are awesome.)
One breakfast, we were brought water and coffee immediately, and asked if we were ready to order. We asked for a minute or two and what the special was. We then waited 20 minutes or so before the wait staff returned to take our order. Breakfast was served and that was it; we were forgotten again. No check in to see if we needed anything else, no drink refills, no second cup of coffee, nothing. We left as it is not our job to go find wait staff hired to serve patrons of the Fairmont.
We had checked into a beautiful, larger room on the Fairmont Gold Level Floor and was slightly surprised to see that we were only supplied with one bathrobe but, that was no issue since my wife is the one who uses these. The room itself was an absolute stunner with the exception of containing the worlds smallest bathroom; it is so small that one enters the bathroom and then must step into the shower in order to close the door! Design flaw, here.
Later in the evening on our first night, we stepped off the elevator onto the 5th floor greeted by the very unpleasant smell of sewage. As returned to the room the odour became worse but, once inside the room it was clear for a short while. Soon the odour began to permeate our room so, we called Royal Service and they sent the Director of Housekeeping up who verified the stench, talked to us and provided a short term solution by ventilating the area, spraying the hall area, and providing air freshener spray to us and must have sorted the problem, because; no more smell! With a hotel this old, maintenance is common and somewhere, someone had opened a plumbing vent. Next morning and for the duration of our stay, there were no more issues.
The Castle, as it is known, is still beautiful and the grounds still immaculate. Sadly, many restaurants (Grapes) are still closed but hopefully, that will change soon.
The staff, especially Emmett in our case, are all friendly and pleasant, including the ones that forgot us.
I think I would suggest forgoing the Gold Level as the standard has dropped so much in the lounge that the extra fare is simply not worth it unless something changes drastically.
