Resort that makes you feel like family. ????

Angela S (Alberta, Canada) on Apr 11, 2024

I am a mother of two teens and we recently returned from here and had a wonderful time. The wildlife entertained us along the pathways and there were plenty of places to eat and drink around the resort. I usually don’t write reviews however, I wanted to write and give kudos out to a few of the staff that really contributed to our experience. First, Henry, at the juice bar. Every visit, we were greeted with a smile as though we were long lost friends. He is truly a gem at this resort so don’t miss the opportunity to stop in and say hello while recharging with a nutritious concoction. I will miss my anti-aging morning ritual with Henry and would welcome him and his family in my home at anytime! A special thanks to Omar who also welcomed us for breakfast at the Creperie daily. My son loves crepes and it didn’t matter how often he returned for refills - he was happy to help. The crepes are delicious! And lastly, Edwin. Thank you for looking out for me. ?? There are so many others that I would like to thank, especially all the bartenders that made my daily Expresso martinis, but I can’t remember their names. I do want to mention Sylvain at the excursion desk though because he found the perfect excursion at the last minute for my family, and for that I am very grateful. Thank you Catalonia. We will be back.

The beach and staff make it worth it

Hollie and Chri... H (Vancouver, B.C. Canada) on Apr 09, 2024

We stayed at the Catalonia Playa Maroma last week. We upgraded to a privilege superior room when we booked. Our impression was that it wasn't worth it. We were supposed to have towels in our room upon arrival and bathrobes/ slippers. Neither was there. I was hesitant to put this in the review since we weren't bothered by it but some people may find it important for whatever reason. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. A couple of little annoyances were that the blackout curtains didn't close completely so I had to use a hair clip to hold it together (again not a biggie to us) and the mini bar was not cold at all. We called down to the reception about the mini bar and a very nice maintenance worker came and gave it a few shakes and turns and got it to work somewhat. Never got completely cold but we still drank a few Pepsi's out of it. The pro's: THE BEACH AND WATER. Oh wow! Absolutely beautiful. Like others have said, even though we had Privilege access to the beach (which made no difference at all compared to the other side) there were still guests who were not privilege sitting on the sunbeds. Again, not a biggie but please don't think that you are getting anything special by upgrading for that reason. There was plenty of shade under the palm trees and always a nice breeze to keep you from sweltering in the heat. The flags were red most of the days but it really wasn't a problem to get into the water to have fun. The grounds are also nice. The walkway to all of the buildings was like being in a spa with the Zen music and sound of the birds. We didn't find it terribly long to get from the beach to the reception but maybe some with mobility challenges may find it that way. There are benches to sit on along the way. The staff were amazing! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. They work very hard so please remember to tip them. It goes a long way. I had an incident that I'll explain later on and was treated with care and concern. The food was good. Our favorite meal was at Bloved (which is included in the Privilege upgrade) We sat up on the roof deck and had a lovely view of the sea. Taco's at the Mexican restaurant at lunch were yummy. They have ice cream and crepes available there too. We only ate at the food trucks a couple of times which was annoying due to the number of Coaties (which are very cute but little rascals!) Don't put your food down, it will be gone in a flash. It's best to take your hamburger or hotdog back to the pool or beach but don't put it down. The Buffet was great with lots of selection and fantastic wait staff. Claudia was so adorable and works very hard. When we were there, we had to make reservations on our first day at the al a carte restaurants due to the number of guest staying that week. One suggestion I have for the resort is to maybe have more access to snacky type food (such as chips or other salty stuff to have with your drinks by the pool) I know one of the food trucks had nacho's but the line up was always quite long. The cafe called Aromas had very good cold coffee drinks and the lemon tarts are so delish! Please remember to tip! Even 20 peso's if you can. Hubby doesn't drink and I only a little but I would have to say the best Margherita was at the Steak house. We ended up ordering just pop or virgin Mojitos. We didn't take part in any other activities or watch any shows as we wanted to just relax and chill out by the beach. Plus, we found the wait time for us between dinner and the show time was a little long. We had a nice time just walking down to the beach or sitting on the big swing looking out to the sea. The cons: Unless you love loud Euro disco music the pool won't be for you. They blasted the music basically all day. Having said that, the entertainment crew were so energetic and put on activities throughout the day. Also, forget about getting a sunbed without going down early in the a.m. to get one. We managed to snag a couple one of the days which was right beside the speaker. The pool water was nice and warm. Again, we preferred to be on the beach where it was quiet. Although they are extremely adorable, the Coaties are everywhere and like I said before, rascals. I did something completely stupid the last day of our visit and put my hand out to one after leaving the restaurant. I still must have had the yummy smell of toast and jam. I got bit. It was completely my fault. The front desk people were absolutely fantastic at taking care of me. I'm on a blood thinner so as you can imagine it got quite messy. After we got the bleeding stopped, a lovely young woman named Luisa from Guest Services took me and my hubby down to the beach where the Life guard (who's name escapes me) cleaned me up with proper antiseptics and bandages. He was amazing and so nice. Please don't make the same mistake I made and fall for the cuteness and stick your hand out. Other than that, they are completely harmless. My brother who stayed next door at Secrets said that they have a couple of friendly dogs on the premises and a hawk that keep them at bay. Maybe a suggestion to the management? Overall, we had a fantastic time at this resort. We thought the upgrade wasn't worth it though.
