Horrible resort

millivan1993 (Crown point) on Jun 21, 2021

Resort needs major updates painting over issues did not fix the problem however the views were magnificent and the staff was very friendly I was expecting much better tasting and quality of food presentation of plates was fancy however flavor was lacking and the majority of our group got sick I was surprised they had no grab and go options not even fresh fruit and the wait time seemed to be an issue for every restaurant also the resort turned the only club bar into a covid testing site which left 0 options for evening entertainment dancing et cetera Unless you count the lobby which was which is what they used and said entertainment area might add they have no AC in the lobby or hallways disappointing for sure they also seemed highly understaffed for the seaweed problem and we will never go to a dreams resort again

Wow, what a letdown! This is NOT your average AMResorts property!

TheSuperPaul (Lee's Summit, Missouri) on Jun 20, 2021

This will be a lengthy but honest review for anyone considering staying at the Dreams Sands in Cancun. To say we were thoroughly and surprisingly disappointed in this resort would be an understatement. Whether it be the seaweed that they didn’t clean up for days, or a near complete lack of AC in the common area and restaurants, or next to no water pressure in the shower, or hearing “no” more than “yes” when a type of drink or food was requested (even when requesting the same thing in different places on the resort), we really had by far the worst experience at any AMResorts hotel we’ve ever had, and we’ve been to 4 others, albeit they were Secrets. This was the first stay at a Dreams and it will be the last, at least we’ll never come back to this one. Also, a word of warning that the age someone is considered an adult or child varies based on what site you book your reservation (not sure if I can name travel sites in a review so just check several and you’ll see some say a child is 0-17 when booking but when you’re here on resort they say 17 is an adult at Dreams and this can really impact cost significantly). SEAWEED AND BEACH AREA. The beach area is much smaller in person than it appears in pics. It’s much narrower and not as deep front to back. The ocean is very calm here and shallow well off shore which is nice. Beach vendors are in full force and relentless. Resort security does not keep them at bay like other AMResorts we’ve stayed at. As for seaweed, let’s dive into this hot button issue because it’s what everyone is worried about, and if you’re not, you should be. You’ll read reviews that say this resort does not have seaweed, I’ll be attaching pics that prove otherwise. On day one of our stay there was hardly any and then it rained and the seaweed came in the night of our second full day. We’re now ending our fifth full day and it’s STILL here. They send out some guys in the morning for a bit to pick it up but they barely make a dent in it before they throw in the towel and stop for the day without getting even half of it. We’ve spent 6 weeks in Mexico through the COVID pandemic and spent countless other weeks here over the years. This is the first time we’ve seen them bagging the seaweed into plastic trash bags on the beach and then rolling them through the lobby of the hotel with dollies, wheelbarrows, and old luggage carts over plywood sheets while dripping stinky water all the way out to the front parking lot from the beach, yes even dripping it in the lobby. Some guests even started dragging bags of seaweed from the waterline up to the walkway leading into the lobby (another first I’ve never seen allowed at other resorts). Insane. Every other resort we have stayed at has brought in enough manpower and/or machinery to remove the seaweed every morning. Having it sit on the beach for going on five days (with no end in sight) has been absolutely unacceptable. It’s so bad now that the pools are overcrowded because hardly anyone can stand to be on the beach due to the smell and brown water. So yeah, there can be seaweed at this resort and when there is they are apparently severely under equipped to deal with it appropriately. Just because they’re in a ‘protected cove’ doesn’t mean they don’t get seaweed! By the way, other resorts on the same beach within view of this resort were much better at taking care of their seaweed enough that it wasn’t heaped and extending in the water turning it brown. COMMON AREAS. They’re hot. H.O.T., hot, and stuffy. No airflow one you get away from an exterior door. There are AC vents all over but little to no cool air comes out of them. They do a pretty good job keeping the common areas clean, but it’s tough to be in them when they’re so hot and stuffy. RESTAURANTS AND BARS. There are several restaurants to choose from on resort and you’re walking distance to countless restaurants off resort. The menus read well, but almost all the food we ordered at every restaurant was bland, albeit presented nicely. If it only tasted as good as it looked we’d have been thrilled. There were a few good dishes but overall below average. The hamburgers at the pool were pretty good, don’t miss those if you choose to stay here. The bars were hit and miss. We’d ask for a mini-beer and all but one time we were told they can’t/won’t make them…which is still confusing because they have the ingredients sitting right there in plain sight! ROOMS. Thank goodness the AC worked well in all our rooms (we had 3), the cold air was welcome after feeling like you’re melting at the dinner table or common areas. However, the rooms are very outdated and the bathrooms were even worse. Old, leaky fixtures, barely enough water pressure in the shower to rinse shampoo out of your hair. The entry doors to all of our rooms stuck closed so bad that a few times we had to literally sit on the floor with a foot pressed against the wall and yank repeatedly to get one open. I’ll upload a video of this if possible. In case this happens here’s a tip, use one of the soap bars and rub some soap where it’s sticking. STAFF. The pool and food service staff were pleasant and helpful. The bar staff was just okay. The coffee bar and ice cream staff were great. The check in process however was not great for us. SOCIAL DISTANCING AND COVID. This was pretty non-existent. Most people weren’t wearing masks in common areas despite signs asking all to do so. Social distancing signs were up in places, including elevators, but again most people ignored and the staff didn’t enforce anything. FINAL THOUGHTS. There’s really zero chance of us ever staying at the Dreams Sands again. For the cost the experience was by far the worst of any AMResorts property we’ve stayed at, and it’s not even close. Honestly I struggle to understand how the hotel is rated here as high as it is. Maybe if you haven’t experienced the difference of a great AMResorts property (e.g. Secrets Akumal) then this would seem ok to you, but for us it was such an unfortunate let down. Our oldest daughter got engaged on this trip and we really talked up how nice the AMResorts properties are to our future son-in-law who’d never been to one. Now, we really wish it could’ve been at a worthy resort for such a life-changing event.
