My boyfriend and I spent a week at the gran muthu from Jan 10th to 17th.Overall we had a great stay, clean rooms, (pillows had a bad smell to them but I covered with my blanket I brought from home so I couldn’t smell it) clean resort, super friendly staff, however myself being a picky eater I lived off of bread for the week. Bottled water was refilled. 80% of the people at the resort were Canadians. I would recommend bringing treats/feminine hygiene products rather then tips. The staff informed us that it is very hard to get stuff like tampons, deodorants, medications such as Advil or Benadryl.. we also brought a few packs of chocolate bars and I think it really made their day. One gardener was almost in tears from the chocolate bars he was going to give to his young boy. We had a great stay, however we will not be returning to Cuba because of the food situation. (There was lots of food just not anything that I liked.) I would recommend as long as youre open to eating Cuban food.
Fantastic Trip and Fantastic People - Jan 2023
Jan 25, 2023
My trip (Jan 17-24, 2023) was my fourth time to Cuba but my first to Cayo Coco/this resort. I was in bungalow #8 on the second floor with a beautiful view of the ocean and right next to the pools and main amenities. I (30 years old) travelled with my mother who is in her early 70s, and I can speak for both of us when I say we were both satisfied. Some specific things and people made my trip special however, I will try to be as detailed as possible not only for other vacationers but in the hope management will take note.
It is difficult to imagine how I could have had much more fun, this place is truly great. One of my favourite things about vacationing in Cuba is the Cuban people: they are almost always glowingly friendly and genuine, and this resort was no exception. Every staff member I met was glowingly friendly and did everything they could to make sure people were happy and having fun. This was the case whether or not it was their specific job duty or not (for example, the two gentlemen - I have forgotten their names - who work at the coconut stand greeted me warmly every morning and even made my mom a beautiful woven basket and shell bracelet). We obviously provided a tip but he in no way made us feel pressured to give him one.
As for people who went above and beyond in their specific job duties, the entertainment team at the DJ booth at the pool always managed to round up great crowds for their games and dance instruction and kept the atmosphere lively but not "crazy party loud" all day. At night, they often would bring out the equipment to the 24 hour bar for "crazy party loud" time which was also hugely appreciated. The staff were all fantastic and friendly, and I wish I could mention them all.
Furthermore, there are ample bars on the resort such that there was hardly ever a lineup to get a drink. ALL of the bartenders were overly friendly and, for the most part, they made fantastic drinks. I found the best drinks were at the Havana Club bar at the pool during the day and the sports bar during the night.
While all the staff members were worthy of commendation, there is one who deserves special mention: Yadianis at the sports bar. She makes the best drinks - by far - of anyone around, is highly knowledgeable in mixology, and always very friendly and talkative. Her English is top-notch. She suggested many drinks throughout my time and they were all delicious - my favourite ended up being the "Havana Seven Sour" but she also made a mean daiquiri (pictured) and pina colada.
I found one thing that could be improved is that not all bars were always stocked with all drinks (for example, the snack bar was out of cola for two days). I appreciate that this is due to the crushing embargo Cuba endures, however Yadianis' sports bar NEVER had this problem. Not only did she have all types of drinks all the time, she invests the tips she receives partly into "extra" ingredients which are all but impossible to obtain in Cuba (for example, she has worchestireshire sauce and Tabasco sauce behind the bar - both unavailable products in Cuba she would have needed to invest significant time, money and effort into procuring). For her to use part of what little money she has as a Cuban to be able to make better drinks for her clients really struck me. When I said this to her, her reply was simply "I care". That care comes through, and I am hopeful that management recognizes the unique talent she is and what an asset she is to their resort.
The food was good enough: no place in Cuba will have food that compares to anything "back home" and if you go expecting this you will be disappointed. However, there was variety and always something to eat. Omelettes and waffles or pancakes in the morning, plentiful fruit (which is delicious), and even a pig roast two days I was there. They also have a mini pizza station made to order and roast meats and fish to order every lunch and dinner, as well as a pasta bar at dinner. You wont starve. If you bring some mustard/ketchup/hot sauce from home you will thank yourself re the food (if you can Yadianis always needs worchestershire and Tabasco too!)
Some things that could be improved are:
- Towel exchange was open in theory, but every day we seemed to get some sort of excuse as to why we couldnt get a new towel. We were forced to use the same ones each day.
- Rooms were not cleaned very fast and sometimes not at all. The norm was for the room still not to have been cleaned by 3-4pm, sometimes 5. I dont really care personally but some people would surely. The air conditioner in our room was broken as well, and we had to get a technician to tamper with it. Ultimately we just used our fan (which had to be tightened as it was making lots of noise). This said, I never once had trouble sleeping.
- The lights in our hallway were off every day, and at night the hall was pitch black. For my 73 year old mother, this was not ideal. We mentioned it to the front desk every day and technicians were sent, but only fixed it once for a few hours.
I will most certainly be back!
Great pools, beach not so nice.

Well like any place there are pros and cons -
Pros: the pools are fantastic. Clean, big, with lots of lounge chairs and cabanas.
The staff were lovely. Always kind and helpful. The drinks at the main bar were fantastic - as long as you want a drink with rum ;) The room was modern and functional, the shower was especially nice. There are mostly just Canadians here, a handful of Russians. In mid-January the resort was not crowded, with several of the buildings shuttered. The water sports were fantastic, we went snorkelling out on a catamaran, $60 for 2 people! Just us and the catamaran operator. It was fantastic. Most water sports included, you can also go kayaking, or windsurfing. Keeping in mind it's usually pretty windy there.
Cons: It is noisy. Noisy in the daytime by the pool with inane DJ and entertainment games, profanity-laced rap songs. Noisy at night, up in the theatre area. There are two groups who come here: older people, and younger people, the ones in between are next door at the family resort. The young people party all night and are pretty noisy about it. The food leaves a lot to be desired, with very little in the way of fresh produce. If you like pork, you will love it! Not the resort's fault, Cuba struggles to import food. The beach not very nice, you cannot walk barefoot. The wifi worked OK in the morning, but not at night. Final con: there is a lot of smoking here. Fortunately the bar area is non-smoking, as is the restaurant, but open season everywhere else.
Amazing experience! Friendly, efficient, fun! Can't wait to go back!

What a beautiful resort! Great service, great atmosphere! Food was above my expectations for Cuban food! Showers were perfect, room was cleaned daily! The servers were all a joy! 24 hour snack bar was amazing, I probably ate 20 ham and cheese! Drinks were a plenty and always so good! Miami vice was my favorite! Will be back for sure!!

We went here near the end of Covid restrictions. So resort was at half capacity and that was more than enough as some areas around the resort are rather small. Buffet was good but the specialty dining wasn’t. Pool were beautiful with a infinite pool looking into ocean. Beach was rocky. Staff was very friendly and efficient. Entertainment was entertaining.
