Not as Expected for Melia

We have been home from our vacation at the MCC for a few weeks now and have been reflecting on the vacation and many different posts that have been made (good and bad). Thought we would add our two cents for those planning a vacation at the Melia Cayo Coco.
Firstly, we are not new to Cuba and are aware of the country’s difficulties with supply chain issues. This is our first visit to MCC and would like to share the following thoughts:
Check-In – The shuttle from the airport was a quick 20 minutes and cold beer was available to purchase. When the bus arrived at the MCC we were greeted with welcome drinks and smiling faces. Front desk associates were always willing to assist. We requested an upgrade to be closer to the ocean without any difficulties. We were offered to look at the room prior to checking in. Shout out to Gippsy the Melia “gem” who was so helpful and had a positive attitude to all who approached her at the front desk. A definite asset to this resort! Many comments are made about the friendly, outgoing staff who made their vacation fantastic. I agree that MOST employees were friendly and willing to help but NOT ALL! I do not book a vacation based on the friendly resort staff. This resort is marketed as a 5 star (Cuban…not Canadian) which it falls extremely short.
Food – There were too many shortages to list including limited fresh vegetables and fruit as well as white wine and liquor. Food selection was very repetitive. The meals at the a la carte restaurants were underwhelming and had very small portion sizes. We ended up going to the buffet after one supper. There were no condiments for sandwiches, etc so bring your own. I could always count on a good breakfast as I enjoyed an omelet everyday. Some days it was extremely warm inside the buffet. Not sure if the air conditioning was working properly? We frequented the beachside Cuban restaurant for their delicious outdoor grilled food for lunch and entertainment.
Rooms/Buildings – This resort is in the process of slowly updating buildings however we were not not lucky enough to stay in one. Many buildings on site are in much need of repair and updating. Our room was clean but everything was extremely outdated. The beds were hard and uncomfortable. The water pressure was so low it made it difficult to shower…disappointing after a day at the beach. The wifi seemed to work well in most areas of the resort. You are given a 5hr card upon check in which you are required to go to the front desk to have reloaded when you run out. NOTE: iPhone users its not a user-friendly login and may take some time so be warned! Front desk will assist you if needed. The lobby bar area is appealing however the new furniture (apparently from this year) is not comfortable as the seating is too deep and the backs are very low. Its too bad because this is a great open-air area to sit and relax at anytime of the day. We enjoyed Spanish coffees and strawberry daquiris. The downfall is the poor service for drinks which can take over half hour when the lobby isn’t even busy. Yes, we tipped with every drink order we had! They didn’t seem to care.
Tipping – We tipped with every meal, drink order etc we received. This is not expected by the employees, but much appreciated. We were made aware at the end of our vacation to give items, tips to those who are not directly involved with the guests ie gardeners, beach workers, bathroom cleaners. They work hard and don’t always receive monetary tips like the waiters, and maids. (your leftover toiletries – toothpaste, lotions, razors, shirts, shoes)
Currency – DO NOT BRING COIN for tips!! Coin and damaged bills are not accepted at their banks. We bought back coin from workers on the last day so they weren’t stuck with it. Please do the same. We typically used USD $1.00 bills HOWEVER never used USD for purchasing anything. We used either Canadian currency or credit card at the government shops.
The typical age of guests is over 50 at this adult only resort with under 500 guests making it a bit quieter than other resorts. The nightly entertainment didn’t always appeal to us and it was held around the pool area as the theatre is still under repair. Would have loved to enjoy this resort when it was at its prime! The expansive beautiful white sand beach is rated among the top. There is some seaweed that is cleaned up every morning. Palapas line the beach looking onto the blue ocean. This is the best part of the resort in my opinion. Sadly, this is not enough for us to return until the shortages are sorted out and updates are completed where needed. For the price we paid…not worth it.
I have rated this resort a 3 star only due to the beach, otherwise I would rate a 2 1/2 star

Another fabulous vacation! The entertainment staff Chocolate mama, Lea, Victor etc kept us entertained with beach volleyball, bocchi ball, poolside games, my favourite. Food was amazing and always something to satisfy every pallet. Some drink shortages, but next day available. Take a shower early as not a lot of water to shower during prime shower time. Gippsy did a spectacular job keeping our group of 10 next to each other, near pool bar as requested. Room was clean everyday. Servers and bar tenders were always polite and serviced our every need. Dayan at pool side restaurant made the best lemon slushy for me, and Jorge makes us laugh every morning when bringing my cappuccino. Yes sometimes there are things missing eg. White wine, pineapple juice, tomatoes but that is Cuba, the service at this resort all in all is terrific.
