The Good is Good, but…

paulaD1696NV (Toronto, Canada) on Oct 23, 2021

Four stars for a Fairmont property. Let us explain. First, though, it’s only fair to say that the JPL is, from the start, a different beast. It is rustic and outdoorsy, not modern and “high end” feeling. You are there for the view of the mountain reflected in lake Beauvert, and the wildlife wandering the grounds. And both were there in abundance! The walk, (don’t let anyone tell you it’s a hike) around the lake is charming and lovely, (apart from the part that diverts you around the golf course even when it’s not in use out of season and makes it clear who the first class guests are). The outdoor pool and hot tub set up is really well designed with a warm interior entrance and lots of space and towels and so forth. The happy anniversary welcome cheese board and Prosecco were a nice touch. All of that stuff was excellent! (We can’t comment on the spa facilities as we weren’t going there in COVID times). So why only four stars? For what presents as an elite property, there were too many small misses. “Rustic” doesn’t have to mean that the 1970’s are calling for their decor back. The food was fine but really quite ordinary. In the 2020’s “gluten free” options should be more than leaving the croutons off the salad and if the Cobb is going to be a deconstructed salad that makes the diner cut it up like a wedge salad, there should be a warning, (or the kitchen should just mix the salad as a professional kitchen should be able to; let’s be clear there was no esthetic pay off to justify this Cobb salad). Such a clear “mead hall” vibe should have mead available for order. When you order breakfast to the room and say no peanut butter, you shouldn’t get peanut butter. Even if he thinks you’re not his favorite guest, the bartender shouldn’t show it so much. Unfortunately, the list goes on. But the scenery and context are wonderful and as advertised and so the four stars are justified, even at this price point.

Simply majestic

traveller4ever1979 on Oct 23, 2021

It’s been such an enjoyable experience being here with my partner. We are celebrating our anniversary and it was so nice for the staff to put a bottle of wine and treats for our arrival. We were over the moon. Flora at the front desk is a gem. Love her so much. People working at the entrance are amazing at charting routes for hikes. The spa staff are phenomenal too. Dinner in the great hall is really enjoyable. The giant fireplace is really something. So mesmerizing.
