Rooms needs major update!

njordao143 (Honolulu, Hawaii) on Jun 30, 2022

Someone contact us via text in our second day, asking how was our staying so far? We said not so great, because of few issues related to the bathroom and specially the mattress that felt like was 20 plus years old and extremely uncomfortable, like a pullout couch in someone’s basement. They said what can we do to help? We said we would love to move rooms. They said all the rooms was fully booked, but on the same day when we got back to the hotel, on the same floor we were staying, we saw so many rooms that was cleaned and empty with the paper on the door saying that those rooms was clean, meaning ready for feature guests. In another word, they lie by saying was no rooms available. If they couldn’t do anything to help, why did they reached to us in the first place?? We stayed another 3 nights after that since we already paid for it. We travel at least once a month, and this was so far the most uncomfortable bed we ever slept. Besides the bathroom was designed to kindergarten style, extremely short toilet and sink. I would not recommend. On the positive note, the front desk people and the valet was very friendly and polite.

From the moment we checked in at reception we knew we had stumbled upon a hidden gem. This was our first time visiting Hawaii and we were made to feel very welcome. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We were given some unexpected treats in the form of $50 in vouchers for the attached "Fish Hook Cafe", a card for free DVD rentals from a machine in the lobby and a lovely shell necklace to wear each. They also explained how we could borrow free beach towels at reception. We had read some reviews stating that the rooms were tired and outdated and I have to say I absolutely cannot agree with that sentiment. The rooms are clean and fresh. The décor is decidedly "old-school Hawaii" in style but that added to the charm for us. The room we booked was a kitchenette with partial sea view. It was a good size with an extremely well equipped kitchenette. There was absolutely nothing missing that we could have wanted. It had everything from a grill to a coffee machine to a blender and every utensil we could have needed. It even had a new scouring pad and little bottle of detergent for us to do our washing up. The furniture is a bit kitsch as mentioned, but it's very comfortable and practical. The mattress was medium-firm and the pillows were quite firm. We asked for feather pillows and we got them without delay. We slept very well and comfortably. There is plenty of storage with drawers under the bed and a large wardrobe so the room was easy to keep neat and tidy. There is a comfortable sofa bed and a dining table with 2 chairs. The TV was good and it had a PS3 connected to play the DVDs if you wanted a quiet night in . The balcony was small but we could sit out there and see the ocean in the distance. The air con was very effective, though a little loud as the entire unit was inside. However, you can select a low fan speed and it didn't keep us from sleeping. Bring ear plugs if that's a concern. The bathroom was a nice size with a shallow tub and a great shower. There is an ironing board and iron in the wardrobe if you need to freshen up your clothes. There is also a laundry room in the building. The machine's operate on quarters and there is a detergent dispenser that takes quarters too. We didn't use it but it was great to have the option. The rooms are not cleaned daily, you need to organise with reception if you want to get it done. We had it done once on our 5 night stay and that was absolutely fine. If you needed any fresh towels or supplies that was never an issue. We got more coffee (local Kona coffee!) for our machine from reception any time we needed it. The pool area is small but there were loungers available anytime we went down there. They are comfortable and have cotton covers for sanitary reasons. The pool was a lovely temperature and great for cooling off during the day. The BBQ area next to the pool looked great with plenty of guests using it, but we never bothered. They have a free wine and cheese event for an hour 3 times a week. There was a duo playing traditional music and Hula dancing which was very entertaining. They had a good selection of wine and even a couple of local beers all for free! We attended twice during our stay and were pleasantly surprised to find a new selection of drinks and a different musical act on the second night. The hotel is in an ideal location in our opinion. It is a short walk from the beach through DeRussy park. It is also a short walk to the main shopping and nightlife areas. Best of all the Luana is in a relatively quiet area beside the park and so noise at night is not much of an issue. We didn't have a car but I believe parking is expensive, though that is true everywhere in Waikiki. A tip I can give is that we used HUI car share to rent a car for a day. The app is simple to setup and they have cars all over Waikiki. At the end of the rental you drop the car back to the same parking spot you left from so you don't have to worry about parking charges. They also include gas in the rental with a fuel card in the car if you need to fill up so at about $12 per hour it was a great option for a day trip to the North Shore. There is a HUI location two doors down from the Luana. TLDR: The staff are wonderful, the hotel is in a great location with good amenities and the room was perfect for our needs with a superbly equipped kitchenette. Thank you to all at the Luana Waikiki, we hope to come back some day and we will absolutely be booking with you again!

Never Again!

astrobleme on Jun 24, 2022

As a Maui resident, I was a frequent visitor to the Luana Waikiki during my trips to Oahu. The Luana is a very basic budget hotel, but the low prices and high quality of customer service made up for minor issues like broken hairdryers or clogged shower drains. However, on my most recent stay, it became clear that the previously high quality or customer service has gone severely downhill. I was charged a huge ($800) “damage deposit” AFTER I had finished my stay and checked out of the hotel. When I called the front desk to inquire about this charge, they initially denied that the charge had been made at all. Several phone calls later, the Luana staff eventually admitted that the charge had been made, but claimed that nothing could be done about it. In their words, my $800 will “probably be refunded by next Monday.” I’m extremely disappointed that an establishment that I trusted with access to my finances would abuse that trust in this way. I’m even more disappointed at the complete lack of accountability or desire to rectify the situation. Don’t waste your vacation at Luana Waikiki when there are so many better options for hotels that will show respect for your time and money. I won’t make that mistake again.

Location of the hotel is a good location. Short walking distance to beach. The staff and employees were great, the valet and bell staff were extraordinary, friendly, polite, helpful and ready to help. The rooms with the kitchenette was a great option to have. Pool was great, very clean and towels were great. Fish Hook restaurant was a nice addition for a quick food run. Had a very pleasant stay.
