Don’t listen to the haters- this place is AWESOME!

We stayed at Aulani for 9 nights. Before going I almost changed our reservation because of reading all the negative reviews on here. If the prices for other hotels hadn’t been outrageous I probably would have. It would have been a BIG mistake. We LOVED this hotel. We’ve stayed at the Ritz and the Kahala and we liked Aulani better. The pools and lazy river are amazing. The check in process was lengthy because of the QR code but they are trying to keep you and their island safe. They had someone going through the line checking codes to try to speed up the process. Pool chairs did get reserved early but we went at noon and 1pm sometimes and always found chairs. Were they ideal? Maybe not. But we were in the pool, riding water slides, in the lazy river so it didn’t matter. We had a deluxe studio for 2 adults and a child. I was very worried it would be too small but we felt like it was perfect. People complain about the beds a lot. Was it the most comfortable bed I’ve ever laid in? No. It was not a big deal and I never would’ve thought about the comfort if I hadn’t read all the comments. Having the fridge and microwave in the deluxe was nice. The room also has an opening underneath the bed at the end that was perfect for storing our suitcases.
I feel like if you do your research and go in knowing COVID is still limiting things you will enjoy it. We loved this place so much we bought DVC while we were there, so it can’t be as bad as haters make it out to be.
All About the Aulani and How to Survive It

The Good: plenty of pools, super fun slides, very-lazy river, calm and beautiful lagoon, plenty of chairs with umbrellas on the beach, complimentary boogie boards.
The Bad: EXPENSIVE all around, crowded, small outdated and super dark rooms (we booked a 2 bedroom villas that was supposed to fit 9 people for 5 of us-2 adults and 3 kids-and already felt crowded), limited selection on menu, not much to do outside of the resort. Did I say crowded? Yes, very CROWDED! Be ready to wait in check-in line for at least 45 minutes after a long flight and a 40 drive from airport to hotel, even if you already checked in online. Ugh.
The Ugly: not nearly enough pool chairs and umbrellas. If you want chairs and especially if you want umbrellas (who wouldn't in that sun all day), you need to get down to the pool and sit on the wet chairs and DO NOT MOVE (even to go to the bathrooms) before 8 am. After 8, you cannot leave your chairs for more than one hour. If you do, they WILL take all of your belongings and you have to go get it back. It is not a vacation when you have to rush down in the morning to secure chairs. We were able to get pool chairs everyday we were there because my husband is an early riser, but it made me very sad to see families with young children having to sit on the ground or under the trees(if they are lucky) with their towels and a million things they have to bring down to keep their kids happy and comfortable. They shouldn't have to. They paid too much money to have to do that and I paid too much money to have to witness that. It really cheapens the environment and experience. MOSQUITOS will eat you alive. My poor husband had to walk around every night trying to kill them before bed. If you stay in room 102, you might see some evidence of his nightly mosquito hunt on the walls. No housekeeping yet. You will need to vacuum your own room. Yes, at a luxury hotel and you have to request a vacuum and do it yourself. Spa and Kids Club not open yet. Bar is not open until 10. Isn't Mimosa and Bloody Mary part of breakfast, especially at a resort full of children? By the way, you can't even have your drinks anywhere near the pool or in the pool. What? Your chance of getting early check in or late check out is one in a million.
Tips: pay extra and book pool side rooms unless you like to walk a lot and wait for elevators to and from your room. Kids always seem to be forgetting something and needing something from the room. Visit the market, pizza place, and coffee shop across the street. Send your nice husband and his other dad friends to the Monkey Pod across the street to put your name down before you take yourself and your kids over there for dinner. The wait is LONG! Book a couple of dinners and go for drinks at the Four Seasons next door.
BOTTOM LINE: Be ready to pay. If you are looking to relax, this is not the place for you. It is a must if you have kids. It was on our bucket list and I am glad we took the kids. If I can do it over, I would book here a couple of nights only just for the experience and spend the rest of our stay somewhere else. 7 days there was just too much. The only way to survive is to come with good friends that have kids as well. We personally won't be going back.
