Huge Hotel, Cold Pools, Inconsistent Food

mlbidna (Las Vegas, Nevada) on Jan 12, 2022

A little background and detail before I explain the three-star rating Family of 4 including 8 and 10 year old traveling for 7 nights. Hilton Diamond member booked in the Palace tower but upgraded for a nightly fee to the Makai tower. My wife and I have been to many 5+ star resorts including the Grand Wailea on Maui so for the offered price per night we expected similar amenities. With this said it was over the holidays so we understand we believe others need to understand ALL hotels are priced accordingly! Amenities: Swimming pools are FREEZING. If I were to guess the pools were in the mid-high 60's. One person sarcastically said to us "it's ok, once you're in for a while it's STILL cold!" This is far and away the biggest drawback to the resort and why I would likely not return on a cash rate. It's not fun when you have to actively "suck it up" to go in the pool in Hawaii. Food: The food was very hit and miss. The Lagoon Grill was very good and a shoutout in particular to Scottie and Jeremy who were always extremely positive even with the incredibly high volumes. The Orchid Marketplace next to the Kona Pool is horrid and can only be compared to mediocre airport food or items you would get at a gas station convenience store. Kamuela Provision Company was also very disappointing but I would highly recommend Nui Italian. (I've reviewed many of these separately) Why the missing stars and subsequent 3-star review: Pool temperature and food quality. It's Hawaii. It's amazing. You really can't beat the weather and the overall hotel grounds and rooms are great. Check out the Dolphins and go explore the surrounding areas. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this review.

Hilton Waikoloa Village beautiful but disappointing....

jvirish (Miami, Florida) on Jan 10, 2022

The grounds of this hotel are spectacular. There is exquisite artwork everywhere. That being said, the room was dusty, shoddy, and needed upgrading. We were so excited to be there and kept running into disappointments like our room and felt as though we were being nickeled and dimed to death at every turn. We were blown away by how expensive everything was...it is out of control and embarrassing. We anticipated high prices but we expected a much more quality experience which we were happy to pay for. We did not get what we paid for. I am beginning to feel that this hotel takes advantage of their patrons by not providomg quality rooms and services under the guise of Covid. If the room rates at this hotel were reasonable, we would understand but as you can see for yourself, the room rates are outrageous for what you get. When you stay here, follow the advice of other reviewers, bring food, beverages, wine, etc. with you or you will be at the mercy of the hotel as it is isolated and the only place to shop is about a mile walk. Even when we inquired about the whale watching excursion we had previously arranged, the events person rudely brushed us off after she realized that we were not going to sign up for her high pressure time share sales pitch. Its all about the your money at this hotel so bring pockets full of cash and plan on being taken advantage of. Sadly, we will never visit Hawaii again based on this experience. From what I heard from other visitors, we were not the only ones who feel this way.
