We wanted to warn other travelers. The service was so bad the first day that, that I asked my wife if she could explain just what exactly was going on here. The next day it became clear when the hotel union went on strike. The union chose to use the guests as leverage in their negotiations. My wife and I were rudely awakened at 7 AM by someone a few feet outside the front of the hotel SCREAMING through a megaphone with banging drums, nonstop until well after dark. Their stated goal was to force the paying guests to leave the hotel. It worked, we tried to get another hotel, but none were available at that time. Beware, who knows the next time the union wants to extort even more from the paying guests and hotel itself. Rest assured, we will never waste our time and money here again.

The Royal Kona is our favorite place to stay when we are in Kona. We have never had a bad experience in the past 12 years of staying there.
