Second visit to Occidental Papagayo and I must it was very disappointing. Not terrible - just not the same place it was at our last visit. Staff okay - pleasant but not particularly helpful. Many times acted exasperated. Wifi horrific - almost never able to get signal, had to re-join multiple times per day. Room key-cards often didn't work. Seems like not a big deal but when it's a 15-minute walk uphill to the registration desk and it's the third time that week, it's aggravating. No attendant to help with chairs at the beach so you must lug your own. No hot water two days. Drinks so water down it's a joke. Only time I could tell I had a drink was the bottled beer - that they couldnt water down. First club a joke - no attendant to help with things. Business center a joke - no computers so they tell you bring your laptop - but if you can't get Wifi signal what's the point? Bed bugs. Yup. I realize this can happen at any hotel but when taken with everything else... Beautiful hotel & location, grounds immaculate. Just not what we had come to expect as First Club members.

Will not be coming back

TerryJAZ (Prescott Valley, Arizona) on Nov 22, 2021

The property is beautiful and well maintained. Food was average to slightly above average. My room was nice with a truly beautiful view. My room was also as far away from everything as you can possibly get and still be on the property. I was in room 1415. Building 1400 is up a very steep incline AFTER you have already walked up and down hilly pathways. None of the pathways have any signs indicating which direction it is to the lobby, swimming pool, restaurants, beach or any of the buildings. No maps are provided and this is a huge property. You were told to download a map using a QR code that worked sometimes, when it wanted to, but the map kept disappearing from my phone. You could take a picture of the map near the lobby, but it was of little use because of glare and lacking any reference points. After a few days of getting lost regularly I decided to find shortcuts through other buildings on my own. They have “trollies” that will take you around…if you can find them and if they will stop for you. Most of the staff is friendly. The BIG exception to this is the front desk. Only one woman there understood the meaning of customer service or that they are in the hospitality business. This is the first impression when guests arrive and the last when they leave. The resort fails miserably in this area. The desk clerks could not be more rude if they tried…then again, maybe they are trying…to be rude that is. If you asked them for something it was was always a curt response. If you spoke Spanish, you got better treatment. I speak enough Spanish to understand some of the things they were saying and it was not always nice. One night a female guest fell out of the trolley and had a serious head wound. Concussion for sure…potentially a fracture. She sat in a golf cart for over an hour and a half at the front lobby because they would not call her an ambulance. Would I go back there…NO! Crazy! They could really be a nice resort, but underneath the makeup…they are just ugly on the inside.
