Perfect get away

My family & I, enjoy this trip, beautiful place the beach is 5 minutes walk, Food & Fruits were always there, for the take. Most of all very friendly people, Hotel was clean & safe. We had FUN, Occidental Tamarindo, Playa Langosta. Costa Rica

Excellent Value for a Fabulous Resort Vacation! Can't Wait to Return!

As a 55 year old solo female traveler my criteria for lodging is it must be clean and it must be safe. Other than that I'm easy to please. TL;DR - Great resort, plenty of tasty food, great beer & cocktails, day drinking at the pool is perfect, stellar employees, immaculately clean room, super comfy bed. Decide in advance that you will have a great time, and you will. Learn names, talk to staff, leave small tips, be nice. You will have a blast!! Long version - Despite having read mixed reviews I booked Occidental Tamarindo without hesitation because the price-point was within in my budget and I know how to have a great time no matter where I am. I wanted my last 4 nights in Costa Rica to be nothing but R & R and I was not disappointed. Check-in: I checked-in on a Saturday afternoon after the long drive from Monteverde. Upon driving up to the entrance the first person I encountered was a security guard who was so warm and personable I felt immediately welcomed. The check-in process was really smooth and painless. Joaquin (moved my car to the parking lot) and Claudio (managed my luggage and delivered it to my room once ready) make an awesome first impression of the resort. Mauricio and the staff at the check-in counter were awesome and genuinely appreciative to have tourism back on the rise. I wish I had gotten all of their names. Buffet: My room was not ready yet so I was directed to the buffet to have lunch. The first person I met was Keylin. She was so warm and welcoming, very patiently answering my questions. I would go on to see her a lot over the next few days. She always greeted me with me a friendly wave no matter how busy the buffet restaurant was. All of the staff at the buffet were amazing and hard working. I was pleased to meet Meitel, who was working at the salad buffet on my first day. Every day he greeted me with a warm welcome from behind his post at the buffet. The buffet was made up of standard of Costa Rican food with other options included. A separate smaller buffet included multiple salad options, and a great selection of fruits, meats, cheeses and breads. Honestly, I do not understand the complaints about quality or the variety of the food. There was plenty to choose from and you can get creative by combining different foods. Example - penne pasta, alfredo sauce and the steamed vegetables became a delicious pasta primavera for my lunch one day. Along with a salad and bread it was a delicious meal. Seriously, there is a lot to choose from on the buffet. The breakfast buffet was amazing. Alejandro, at the omelet station, makes a mean omelet and perfect over-medium eggs. He was so kind and friendly. Very outgoing personality. The buffet contained traditional Costa Rican breakfast items as well as pancakes, French toast, potatoes , sausage, oatmeal, pastries, a variety breads for toasting, fruits, cheeses and so on. I had dinner at the buffet on 2 nights. Traditional foods along with a good variety of other options. The Caribbean chicken was fantastic! All of the fish I tried was very tender and tasty. Staff was amazing with the keeping my wine glass filled :-) Again, so much variety to choose from one would be hard pressed to go away hungry. There is a very clean microwave at the end of the smaller buffet if your food is not warm enough after making all of your selections or if it gets cold while you're eating, Remember to grab a paper napkin to cover your plate in the microwave. Italian Restaurant: Since my room wasn't ready I walked over to the Italian restaurant to make a reservation. Alberto is the star of this restaurant. So kind, very accommodating, and genuinely concerned that your enjoy your meal. Veila, the young lady working with Alberto, was equally delightful and genuine. I really enjoyed talking with both. I was fortunate enough to dine at the Italian restaurant twice during my stay. Both meals were good although I wish I had tried the wood-fired pizza as it looked and smelled amazing. Room 9333: My room was fantastic. I booked the superior room which was a great choice. The price wasn't much more than the rate for the regular room and was definitely worth it!! Immaculately clean (and I am germaphobe, so that's saying something) and comfortable. The balcony was really enjoyable as I could hear the sounds of the ocean when the doors were open. The bed was the most comfortable I had slept in during my entire 2 weeks in Costa Rica. I did not have any issues with the card key and did not use the safe at all. Pool & pool area: Plenty of loungers, tables with chairs, and palapas. The staff is out before 7am every.single.morning hosing down everything at the pool area - loungers, chairs, tables, concrete, etc. The pool was cleaned/vacuumed every morning as well. I never found the pool to be dirty. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The water aerobics were really fun, too. Loved the entertainment guys who led them. Pool bar: Great drinks! Jammy (sp?) is the best bartender. She is so delightful and great representative for the resort. I didn't get the names of the others but all of the bartenders I encountered made excellent cocktails. There is a menu of the cocktails they make but the bartenders will literally make you whatever you want. Just tell them. Not enough alcohol in your drink? Tell them you want extra rum (vodka, gin, whatever) or order your drink along with a shot or two, then dump the shots into your drink. Seriously, it is not difficult to get what you want at the pool bar. The bartenders are busy and are not mind readers. Be polite and tell them exactly what you want; they will deliver. By day 2 they know you, and they remember what you like ;-) Pro tip - order drinks 2 at a time so you can spend less time returning for drinks. I did not try the food at the pool bar but it smelled amazing! Burgers, fries, etc. Beach: So many gorgeous seashells! The surf was rough but the surfers really enjoyed it and were fun to watch. Lots of loungers available at the beach. The beach is great for walking, too. Noise level: I did not personally find the noise level too loud but that's me. I enjoyed the band that played at the pool bar every afternoon. I believe they also play at the lobby bar in the evenings. I never made it to the lobby bar due to sheer exhaustion at night, lol. I did not hear any noise from my room but if that's a concern for you just request a room far away from the pool/lobby. Staff: Every single staff member I encountered was polite, receptive, warm and friendly. They are working so hard to make everything perfect. Please acknowledge the presence of every staff person you encounter. Make eye contact, say hello, good morning, thank you, etc. They are not part of the scenery and deserve to be acknowledged, not ignored. Tipping: Never once felt that tipping was expected but I can honestly say it is greatly appreciated. I tipped small amounts daily at meals, at the pool bar, for housekeeping, for luggage service etc. Ask/Learn the names of the staff: Wearing a mask makes it difficult to see your demeaner. Take a minute and learn the names of the people who are waiting on you, cleaning up after you and providing a service to you. Have a quick conversations; ask how their day is going or practice your Spanish if time permits. You get back what you put out into the universe. These folks are working tirelessly to give you a great vacation. Covid has changed everything about travel. As I previously stated, be flexible and decide in advance that you are going to have a great trip. It will be fantastic if you do.
