Mario @ Naos (breakfast)

jorgelN4065YK (California Desert, California) on Jul 28, 2021

This review is solely for our breakfast waiter at Naos named Mario. I never take the time to do a review but, this man right here made our trip “fantastical”. Mr. Eddie Jan (sorry if I misspelled your name) Mario should be the mold and the example of every employee at your facility. This is our 4th time at Paradisus Unfortunately this time we were disappointed by the understaffing and lack of service we are used to getting from the staff. Mario on his own made our trip wonderful. Our favorite part of the day was looking forward to going to eat breakfast and to be greeted and welcomed by Mario. His professionalism and attention to detail, and service is by far the best I’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world. I cannot say enough about this man, he made us feel like part of his family and that to me means everything. The following staff also deserve some love The ladies at Kids-zone (Viridiana, Brittany, Judith) are also pretty awesome. Pool-man “Johnny” - won’t dissapoint you Xóchitl from Naos at dinner was very pleasent. There was also a server named “Monica” at different restaurants. Even though she had a mask on you could tell she was always smiling and her mannerism were very welcoming. If Mario ever goes to work somewhere else , my family and I are willing to travel to where ever he goes just to experience his dedication and quality of service. Yes, he’s that good.

Worried at first, but ended up good.

I was extremely worried about staying here after reading all of the negative reviews. They definitely helped us with a few tips though, so thank you to everyone who has done a review. I'll start off with a short list and go into detail. My family (2 adults, 2 young teens) stayed July 22-27th and paid for the upgraded Reserve status all through Costco. Pros: Clean, sanitized rooms and overall property Do not have to wear masks in resort except entering and exiting restaurants Friendly staff Good drinks, bartenders were fast and friendly Cons: Pool was a disappointment. Way too warm (not refreshing at all in the muggy/hot July weather, and dirty. Check-in slow and no details given Dinner reservations and overall food selection Check-in: Upon arrival, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the Reserve check-in process was severely lacking. We waited in line, was given our bracelets, took a credit card for deposit and send us on our way to the room. No drinks offered, no air conditioned room, no introduction to our supposed personalized butler. Our flight was 2 1/2 hours late so we missed our dinner reservation I had made online at home weeks prior and could only get in at the Italian restaurant even though we wanted Mole. Butler: We got a text from (can't remember his name) the day after we arrived saying he was our butler. He reserved a pool cabana one day for us, but that was all. He texted the 3rd day saying it was his day off and he wouldn't be back until the next week! Whatever, we didn't use him anyway. Dinner reservations were all made at the front desk when we wanted. Room: We had a partial Ocean View room with 2 double beds. Nice room, clean, good view. Only complaint on the room was that the shower isn't designed well and water pools all over the bathroom floor. You end up needing to use your used towel as a floor mat which means new towels every day. Not bad, but seemed like a waste of resources. Restaurants: For breakfast, you have two options: air conditioned in Naos or open air in Capella. Same menu. We chose air conditioned every time! Easy to get a table if you eat before 8:30am. One day we slept in and didn't eat breakfast until 9:30am and there was about a 30 minute wait. Lunch only option is Gabi Beach. We never had to wait too long for the open air restaurant part of Gabi Beach. If you want to eat poolside though, it is difficult. Hard to find a server to flag down and food take a long time to get. Same thing with poolside drinks. If you want a drink, you definitely have to order from the bar to get it quick. I never had anyone come ask me to take my order poolside, even in the Reserve section. At Gabi Beach, I enjoyed the BBQ chicken burger, shrimp tacos, and the guac is amazing! Dinner we tried 3 options: Capella (Italian), Mole (Mexican), and room service. We didn't try La Palapa because kids and teens aren't allowed. So even though we paid for the upgrade of Reserve, we couldn't utilize that restaurant. Room service said they would charge $5 per order and we used it 3-4 times but was never charged, so that was a nice surprise. It's great for the late night cravings of teens! Capella is a poor version of Olive Garden. Not great, but it was edible. Mole was our favorite, and seems to be everyone else's so I definitely recommend reserving at home ahead of time if you want a normal dinner hour. The meat was amazing and the tacos al pastor were fantastic! Our 2nd time there, they had a beautiful singer and guitarist to serenade the patrons. One positive to note, we accidentally missed our reservation one night by an hour due to the time change. Since it was just my husband and me, they were able to squeeze us in within 15 minutes. Granted it was 9pm, so don't count on that happening normally. Pool: If you're traveling in July and August, the pool is a must because the weather is HOT and extremely humid. I was deeply disappointed though because the pool is like a warm bath, and someone's leftover bath at that. Cloudy from lotion, sand from kids, and much too warm to even be the slightest bit refreshing. I can't really fault the hotel for the temperature though, unless they had it set to heated. I did like that they had complimentary floaties and balls (volleyball and football) to play with. We were able to reserve a cabana for one day and that is a must! Otherwise it's difficult to get a chair with an umbrella and one day they wouldn't open the umbrellas because it was "too windy". Ocean: Yes, it is a very dangerous beach. My kids are teens, but my husband was in the water with them the whole time and I wouldn't let them go out far. They enjoyed rolling in the waves along with beach. You cannot see the kids playing from the beach chairs though, so you need a second adult with them. Not enough chairs at the beach and almost zero protection from the sun. We all burned badly! The water is cooler than the warm pool, but not too cool. Covid test: Easy and quick. Not much to say about it. I like that it was convenient and they sent the results that evening via email. To Town Side note: If you're wanting to look around the towns, the hotel location is perfectly located in the middle of both. There is a bus stop right by the hotel and it only costs $2 USD per person. It's pretty much only used by locals, but we loved how convenient and cheap it was. Check-out: Check out is strictly at noon. You are able to use everything after you check out and eat at the restaurants, but we asked for a later check out because our airport transfer wasn't coming until 2:30pm and they said no, they were too booked. I think this was a lie because it wasn't too crowded at all and no one was staying on either room next to ours. Check out was easy though and no surprise charges. Overall, I was more happy than I thought I would have been staying here considering the horror stories of the reviews here. The staff are nice, there just aren't a lot of them. My advice, reserve everything you can ahead of time! Get your poolside cabanas each day and dinner each night before you even arrive at the hotel. Oh, and don't go to Mexico in the summer, it's way too hot (at least for PNWers).
