A ways to go before the magic is rekindled

Radioflyer1969 (Los Angeles, California) on Nov 15, 2021

My husband and I just got back from a weekend splurge at the Disneyland Resort. We were very much looking forward to the start of Holiday Time and to our first stay at the Disneyland Hotel. Unfortunately, our experience didn't live up to my expectations. The property itself is nice. The towers are nice and well apportioned. The rooms are clean and festive, though a bit on the small side. However the touches they added during the pandemic... new carpets, drapes and bedding, along with new beds... were wonderful. The beds themselves however are a bit on the hard side and I found it a challenge to get a decent nights sleep. The hotel seems to continue having difficulties with staffing as everywhere we went, waits were excruciating. In fact, on one occasion, when my husband and I simply wanted to have a drink before a dinner reservation, we had to wait in a 30 min line at Tangeroa Terrace to order drinks to go. Forget about sitting outside at the Tangeroa Terrace or at Trader Sams because reservations are required and are quite frankly impossible to get. That's quite simply unacceptable. Forget about trying to lay out and enjoy the pool as a mid-day break from the parks. The pool area, while very nice and diligently staffed by many stern faced, pacing lifeguards, had a despicably limited amount of loungers and chairs. For two days in a row, my husband and I were unable to find a place simply to lay our towels and room key so we could enjoy the pools. We had to wait for someone to leave so we could snag a single chair. This may sound extremely petty, but for the prices Disney charges to stay at the hotel, the fact that we have to wait for an open chair at all is completely unacceptable. The walls between the rooms aren't terribly sturdy. We could hear stomping around, loud voices, the TV and children's meltdowns as clear as if they were in the room with us. Another thing I found unfortunate was the grounds didn't seem to be that well maintained. Although the hotel is non-smoking, I found cigarette butts and marijuana vape cartridges easily viewable from a few seating areas in front of the Frontier Tower where we stayed. I had been looking forward to this trip for months. And I'd waited my whole life to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. It pains me to admit that my expectations weren't even close to being met. Quite frankly, we're paying Ritz Carlton prices for Best Western service. Again, that's completely unacceptable. I sincerely doubt we will ever stay at the Disneyland Hotel again. And that is such a shame. I would humbly recommend to anyone who's thinking of staying here to avoid it and stay at a much more reasonably priced good neighbor hotel. That's what we'll be doing in the future.
