Senator Resort - Lipstick on a pig

sandrabH3996TC (Toronto, Canada) on Jan 26, 2023

I just returned from a 7 night stay at the Senator Resort in Puerto Plata. The resort is very clean and compact in size, which is great for getting around. Lots of palm trees and the main pool with swimup bar was a lot of fun and beautifully set up. Two of the a la cartes were good - the steakhouse and the Japanese restaurant. Good food and good service. Italian was horrible, both food and service. That's where the positives ended. There is literally NO service. Trying to get a coffee in the buffet was like pulling teeth. Many times the coffee machine did not work and they were using paper cups. The sports bar was slow and they ran out of food on the menu. Food was cold in the sports bar. The buffet was like a large, noisy cafeteria with long lineups for subpar, prison food. They had one person making omelettes in the morning. No flavour. No salt, no nothing. The food in the buffet was absolutely terrible. The sports bar was slightly better. They took our food order one night in the sports bar and didn't come back at all. I think you get my point that the food was bad. They didn't always replenish the mini fridge in the room. No water. Really? No beer but I knew that going in but hey if you pay off the guy that refills the fridge, he'll give you beer. By the time you have to pay off the staff to get anything, you could have used that money to go to a better resort. This isn't about tipping good service. This is tipping in order to get any service. I've travelled extensively and this was bad. Then they don't tell you they allow large, rude, obnoxious. loud groups to book the resort and take it over. There was a group of at least 200 people from Quebec that took over the resort. They had a concert by the pool and you couldn't even get near the swimup bar. I didn't pay money to listen to French music in the Caribbean and don't tell me to go some other part of the resort if I don't like it. The sports bar was swarmed and the entrance was blocked by this group. I guess the food shortages in Cuba are too bad this year even for the frugal Quebecers because they usually go there. One other very important thing. Do not get sick or injured at this resort as they do not have a wheelchair! An older woman staying at the resort ended up in hospital for 5 days and when she returned to the resort, her friends were told that the resort does not have a wheelchair. She had to walk back to her room in 90 degree weather. The ultimate club timeshare golfcart buggy wouldn't pick her up in the lobby because she's not part of that club!? That's deplorable. The whole timeshare club thing is a joke too but that's another story. The lack of wheelchairs and service makes this place a non-negotiable for me. The large obnoxious group was the icing on the cake. I would not go back nor recommend this resort to anyone.

Great vacation would go back again

craigmY2129QJ (Timberlea, Canada) on Jan 26, 2023

We just got back from the Senator Resort and Spa. We had a great experience all the way around. The resort was beautiful with several clean pools to lounge around. If you want the best seat by the pool you need to be ready to lay your towels on the loungers by 5:30 am the next morning to guard that spot for the daily use. The buffet had plenty of different varieties of food that could please any customer. We also enjoyed all three Ala Carte restaurants. For Embers steakhouse I would recommend the tenderloin. For the Italian I think the pasta and chicken was awesome tasting. For the Japanese try to get the experienced Chef that we heard is hilarious and loves to interact with his guests. If you do the resort walk through they will show you fantastic rooms for 50 weeks as low as $35 k. Of course we declined. (Lol) The deal is this takes 90 mins and the gift is $80 towards excursions or gift shops. They will try to get you pumped up which can take up to 3 hours if you let them. We used our credit on an excursion through Tourismo in the Hotel. We went on a half day Catamaran snorkeling tour. with Tip Top Catamaran. After we applied the resort credit it cost $76. We got picked up at 7:40 and driven to Sousa. We went on 75' Catamaran with a crew of 9-10 people. They were all very professional striving to keep us safe, well fed, well preserved (lol) and dancing. We stopped two-three times over reefs to take in the snorkeling which didn't disappoint. The tropical fish were stunning. We then set sail all the way back to our resort area which saved us a long bus ride. At the resort there is a 24 hr sports bar that serves food like nachos at 2am. There is a pizza shop and a special coffee shop. There is a snack bar also. I recommend the clubhouse. You can also use all the facilities at the Playa Bachata next door. They do karaoke night. I could go on and on about this great resort. We stayed in building #1105. The room was great and the king mattress was excellent along with the pillows. We came direct with Sunwing with no issues out of Halifax.
