We have visited this property 3 times now - once staying in honeymoon suite at Garza, then deciding on Mousai for our latest 2 trips. We fell in love with this property 6 years ago, because of the views but mainly the outstanding service. When we think of paradise, we think of this resort. So much so that we decided to bring friends along with us this time for a couples trip. We even considered purchasing into the residents program but this latest trip changed our mind. I think this resort has run its course for us.
If you’ve never been here, you should definitely come. You’ll love the views and the staff and luxury accommodations. But I think if you are a return visitor, you might be disappointed the experience is not what it used to be as the resort has become more well known and increased occupancy due to people traveling after Covid.
When we first visited 6 years ago, the pool waiters knew you by name and quickly knew your favorite drink. Anytime we would swim, our chair towels would be replaced with dry towels. They came around to clean your sunglasses and offer you cool scented towels. The pool mixologists took time to know you and your likes (even had a drink named after me!) and cool extra thinks like watermelon Jell-O shots at the rooftop pool. You were allowed to swim in the rooftop pool at night for sunset drinks. None of that happened this trip. (Also lacked our last trip in 2019 - except towels. Towel guys Rico and Alan were awesome on that trip)
Because our first trip was so amazing, we compare every other visit to it now and it’s just not the same. I’ll highlight the good and the bad below. I don’t want to discourage anyone from coming. I think you’ll have an amazing time especially if you don’t know how good it used to be.
Our butler Carlos was amazing and decorated for our 5yr anniversary and was very helpful securing reservations and a beach cabana for us. Our friends had Ernesto and he helped us too when Carlos had a day off. We loved Ernesto. Request either for your butler and you’ll be in great hands.
We stayed in ultra suite so we could do hydrotherapy every morning after breakfast. It’s very relaxing and a must do! Also do the aromatherapy every night. Mousai is our fav scent!
Hiroshi has been our favorite restaurant every time we visit. The service and food are amazing. Try the lychee martini!
The room - it’s large and luxurious. The hot tub is perfect for taking in a sunset or waiting out a rain shower.
Rooftop restaurant- we almost skipped this because the menu was limited but the sunset views, the ambiance at night and food was delicious. It should not be missed!
And lastly the staff: Gustavo the bellman. He’s always greeted us past few trips. Such a nice soul. Angel in the terrace restaurant for breakfast - his positive attitude sets the tone for a great start to the day. Alan the towel guy on rooftop pool. He’s been so nice both of our latest trips. Karen in the spa is so nice and sweet. And of course our butlers Carlos and Ernesto. All of these people provided great service.
Room for Improvement:
Check in - as repeat guests I wish they would recognize that loyalty to their brand and resort. There were no extra perks or welcome back as other hotels do for return guests. Also my card was charged twice so they had to refund me. Then they didn’t run it for incidentals since I was charged $3,300 twice. That created an issue when I tried to add tip and caused me to get a call at 11pm at night to come run my card for incidentals. Could it not have waited til the morn? It was a $3 tip to bartender. My husband just ran cash down to him.
Blanca Blue - I don’t know how this place is still open. Every trip, the service is so slow. It’s a 3 hr dinner so don’t go hungry. It’s sad because it’s a great view but management over books and it’s not big enough for a resort this size. It’s going to get even worse when the second tower is built. They need to cover the outdoor seating so it can be utilized. I wrote a terrible review on TripAdvisor if you want more info. Food is just ok. Nothing special. Least fav of the 3 restaurants on property. The hostess here is not nice. She’s also the breakfast hostess at Blanca Blu and was rude to us there as well.
Beach cabanas - They advertise that Mousai guests have special area on the beach but what that really means is only if Elite members don’t want them. Unfortunately it’s not easy to get a beach cabana and you only get leftovers and most Elite members reserve chairs or cabana for full day and never use it (or show up at 5pm to use it while it sat all day unused)
Our butler was only able to get it for us one day, last min because an Elite member left. There should be cabana for Elite and cabanas for Ultra Mousai guests.
Rooftop Pool service - we had to flag someone down for drinks or even ask our butler to get us a waiter. I don’t think it’s their fault but too many people, not enough servers. I will say it’s better than most large resorts but we were used to impeccable service our last trips here. Also, you had to get to pool before 10:30 to get a chair by pool. Our butler couldn’t reserve us chairs. If I pay more for butler service, they should allow them to reserve chairs. Otherwise they basically just book your dinner and spa reservations which you really could do yourself. The pool has never been as crowded as it is now - so many people traveling.
Kayaks - our friend kayaked to Los Arcos- they didn’t have single kayaks so he had to use a double which is not easy for one person to manage. Why would they not have a few single kayaks? Also he was given regular goggles and not snorkel goggles because he went with a large group and there wasn’t enough. (Apparently people lose them at Los Arcos after being told a million times by guide to secure them) but a resort making this much $ can afford to buy more snorkel gear.
Pizza on the beach - they literally ran out of pizza one day. I don’t know how that happens at a luxury resort.
Covid test - it’s the touch your brain test. I was expecting quick swab of the nose as they do in US now.
Food - all the food was good but 3 out of 4 of us developed stomach issues the last few days of the trip. Just take meds in case or request antibiotics. We could’ve called the Dr I’m sure but it wasn’t bad enough to ruin our trip and we didn’t want to trouble anyone. Next time, we’ll prob just see a Dr because I heard they can cure with one shot/pill. We are just weird about inconveniencing anyone or being too needy. We go to Mexico a lot and have never had issues so it was bound to happen eventually.
We still recommended this resort to friends coming in October. However it’s time for us to find a new place. I think we’ll try the newer Taffer resort in Cancun. And one day maybe we’ll return again.
Thanks Jose & Christian
