Family of 4 with 2 young kids, Great pools, beach, decent food.

Adam W (Toronto, Canada) on Feb 21, 2024

We travelled as a family of 4 with two young kids (2, 5.5), so this will all be in that context, certainly a lot of parenting somewhere else vs the fully romantic and relaxing vacation of the past. Overall, this place worked well for us. I like how compact it was with our room being 5 minutes from the lobby, 3 minutes to the pool, 7 min to the breach. Beautiful property, friendly staff, great facilities. Very wagon friendly :) From a kids standpoint there was enough to do, but next year we may look for a place that has a little more (lazy river, slides...). The advantage of not having that was there were not too many kids around so our kids were treated with love and the resort was very peaceful (no loud kids yelling and running). Accommodations: We upgraded when we got there to a family suite (1 bedroom room) upon arrival at a costs $500USD to upgrade (as I was a IHG member) and it was very worth it. Room was large, nice balcony, well stocked mini bar (beer, glass bottles of coke/diet coke, juice...), microwave, safe. The view wasn't great as it looked out to a few stores but we didn't care (poolside would be nicer if you did care). There were 4 glass refillable bottles in the room and a refill station with purified water right outside our room so really easy to keep hydrated. We were on the 1st floor (1 level up) and the elevators worked really well (and were entertainment for the kids) so brining our travel wagon was really easy to get the kids from place to place. Food Food was OK. The morning buffet had the core of what you needed including a good assortment and an omelet station. It just got a little repetitive after 7 days, and the kids had a few too many pancakes and french toast as a meal. Most of the pastries were not amazing, but the donut with a cream filling was a highlight as was the churros. The coffee that they served was great (and I'm a coffee snob). The labeling on food was hit/miss. Wouldn't take much to ensure everything was labelled. It would also be nice if the service provided a bit more direction (what's good, what special drinks are here) but they really just took your order. It's that extra level of service and communication that was missing throughout. Lunch: We mainly ate at either the snack bar at the beach (pizza, burgers, chicken burgers, fries) or at the larger restaurant at the beach (pizza, sandwiches, tacos, soft serve icecream if it's working). All were OK, but could use more variety, kids mainly had pizza :) Dinner: Buffet really looked great and offered a nice mix of things. A la carts were OK, service was good (especially at the Mediterranean) but food itself was a overcooked at the gourmet and brisket was mediocre at the smoke house. The Mexican had the tastiest food (and the passion fruit margarita was exceptional). Some of the restaurants are also in repurposed buffets (smoke house, Mediterranean) which did not give the same ambience as the dedicated spaces (Mexican, Gourmet). Overall, nice to get served instead of getting up so many times to keep my kids fed, but food variety and quality of the a la carts could be better (but none of us starved or got sick of any sort so that's a win). Snacks: Not too many snack options outside of a few pastries (same as breakfast) and ice cream. The ice cream parlor was a big hit for the kids (just go early to get a waffle cone as they don't make enough to make it much past noon). Entertainment: There's an unadvertised 2-4pm family time at the playspace that was a highlight. You need to supervise your own kid, but no age limits on who can join in on the fun. There's a room of trampolines, an amazing 2 level structure, giant foam building blocks, a kitchen area for snacks/drinks. Most parents I met never even knew this amazing facility existed. We really enjoyed the singers/saxophone that happens in the lobby several times throughout the week. The shows were too late to be useful for my family (9pm). Pools: The pools are great. There was a kids pool that my kids both loved and spent a lot of time at, and gave us a chance to chat with lots of parents. The big pools both have a big shallow area that the kids also enjoyed (and got to participate in a bit of the aqua fit). Too many people reserve seats making them harder to come by (but that wasn't a problem for us as we were in the water with the kids). Would have been nice if there was a swim up bar, or some water slides, or something else to mix things up with the kids but we brought lots of toys. Beach: The beach is beautiful, great sand, not too wavy. I spent most of my time here in the sand (or buried in sand) or in the water and that was all great. Seats get reserved early but again not a problem for me but be aware of that. There's also a lot of area dedicated to the club that you have to pay more for. Concierge: You will be invited to go to a welcome breakfast at the fancier resort. It's really a sales pitch for the iberostar club (cheaper rates, more benefits). You'll get $100 USD resort credit for attending and it takes about 2.5 hours when all is said and done including breakfast (8am-10:30pm). The kids enjoyed the golf carts and the adventure of it, we found it a little too long but not bad. So decide if you want to do it, but it is pushed hard by the resort staff.

I would probably choose somewhere else

Ladiedy (Painesville, Ohio) on Feb 20, 2024

First the positives…beautiful pools and fantastic weather plus great drinks when I could take advantage of them. Room was outdated but nice enough. Now the negatives…no hot water two late afternoons in a row so very cool showers after the beach. Food was mediocre at best (breakfast better). I couldn’t use my bathtub because the plug wouldn’t stay down tight. Late room cleaning some days held us up from showering. We picked up a mild stomach bug from something..no vomiting but lower issues. Lack of communication among us and some employees..not fluent English or basic English spoken. I must say Franklin at the front desk was very nice and helpful. Shout out to him. Too much bugging by others to buy more time or excursions. We were there to rest and just hang out. We ate at the buffet most of the time but beware the one close to the beach had lots of flies at lunch (watched them land on the burgers that we in buns). All in all we still had a good time mostly because the weather was sunny and hot.
