We just returned from the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus in Bayahibe. It's too bad we only had a week to spend there. We really needed more time since so many of the staff were gracious and welcoming: they made us feel like family. More on that later.
The day of our arrival, we were welcomed with open arms and yummy, fruity beverages. Cynthia at the front desk checked us in and the process was quick and painless. Within about fifteen minutes of our arrival to the gorgeous, huge open air lobby, we were shown to our rooms in Building 6. Rooms 6114 and 6115 were perfect. Close to the pool and far enough away from all of the craziness from the front of the property. Our rooms were spotless. It felt great to get into the A/C rooms. All rooms have a wonderful balcony that looks out on to the beautifully-manicured property. The bathrooms were huge with lots of room. Our room had a huge tub/shower combination while our kids had a room with a gigantic shower. Lots of counter space in the bathrooms, hair dryer, plenty of towels and toiletries (soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, etc. provided. Room had a safe to keep valuables. We didn't take our wallet out once during out stay. TV in all the rooms. We never turned ours on. Fully-stocked mini fridge and dresser for things. Closet was huge, robes and plenty of hangers. Iron also in the closet. Plenty of lighting throughout and a relaxing rocker-type chair in the corner to relax. Sofa as well with comfy pillows for more space. We spent our afternoons after the pool out on our balcony playing cards and relaxing with our kids who joined us.
The food choices here are stellar. Even for those who are particularly finicky (our son), everybody will find something to eat. Food is fresh, made with fresh ingredients. The variety was literally endless. The presentation at each meal (whether in the buffets or the specialty restaurants) was awesome. The service staff is FABULOUS and AMAZING. Water glasses and all beverages were never empty. Anything we needed, it was brought to us with a smile and a sense of graciousness each and every time.
Breakfast was spectacular each day. We sat with Angel and Altagracia. It's too bad we met them more than halfway into our time there. I wish we had met them sooner. They were just amazing. Angel looked for us every single day and sat us with him as if we were the only ones there. He cared for us each morning (the main buffet) and each lunch (smaller, poolside buffet) as if we were his own family. "Hola, mi jefe, mi primo, mi capitán" was how he would greet my family and I every meal. Altagracia greeted us every day with "Mi amor, mi corazón" as if we had just walked into her house. Service truly with a smile made us feel that we belonged there. More on them later. Everything from crepes to pancakes to freshly-made omelettes to order by the man himself, Paolino who was gracious and in the zone every day. Fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, meats of all types, fruits, potatoes...the choices literally were endless. Syrups, sauces, condiments, anything you want for your breakfast they offered. Cereal (hot and cold), oatmeal...if you couldn't find something to eat, you weren't trying hard enough.
Lunch as well was incredible. We ate at the main buffet early on, but when we learned that Angel was in the smaller, poolside buffet at lunch, along with Altagracia, we made the change. So glad we did. The food, still varied and fresh, seemed better, different choices than the main buffet, and still service with a smile a mile wide. Angel and Altagracia would still look for us walking in so we can sit in their area. They always remembered as well what we drank or not, whether we needed salt or pepper, or anything else for that matter. Everything from fresh pasta, meat, cheeses, bread, salads, soups and the list goes on and on. Desserts were made fresh each day. Fresh fruit was offered and the list goes on and on. In the poolside buffet, they offered fresh rotisserie chicken every day. This was not offered at the main buffet. Delicious and tasty, not dry and bland. Everything was freshly seasoned and a variety was offered each day. We never wanted for anything. Fresh vegetables offered each and every day. Incredible variety.
Dinner was also spectacular. The main buffet was tremendous with a billion offerings. I personally enjoyed the soup each night. Two were offered, usually one a vegetarian / vegan option and the other had either meat or fish. Dinner choices ranged from chicken to beef to pork, vegetables, fish, even different types of burgers (chicken, beef). Sides were creative, tasty and healthy. The pasta station was fabulous as well, usually four or five choices of pasta, four or five choices for sauce, and a billion different things to add (veggies, spices, oil, pesto...etc...) And once again, the staff was spectacular; we never waited for anything or a refill on anything. They are there to help and make sure you have an enjoyable meal. Plates and utensils were removed promptly so you can go for another round. Spectacular on every level.
The hotel offers a poolside snack bar as well (nachos, hot dogs, chicken tenders, pizzas of all types, sodas, etc.) There is also a "Starbucks" type of café at the front of the lobby offering coffee beverages (hot and cold) as well as sweets of all types. Room service was also available and we used it several times. Perfect for a snack as an in-between to get you from one part of the day to the other.
The specialty restaurants are amazing. Mexican, French, Japanese and Italian. My daughter and I had Mexican one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was second to none and we enjoyed the atmosphere. We also ate in the Italian selection two other nights and the food was beautifully prepared and extremely tasty.
There are bars everywhere, in the lobby, by the pool (swim up), in the theater, and down on the beach at the Faro Bar, you will never want for a drink, alcoholic or not. The bartenders are fantastic and friendly. They make your stay fun and enjoyable. They sing, dance and have a fantastic time meeting and talking to the guests. It made our stay particularly fun and enjoyable.
The beach is pristine. I woke up nearly every day to watch the sun rise. The pier is a perfect place to watch this. Ask the security guard if it's OK to go out on the pier to see the sun rise. He responded each glad with "Claro que sí" (of course). Make sure to go all the way out on the pier to watch the sun rise over the tree line. Spectacular. The beach is busy with activity every day. Staff runs games and fun activities down there for whomever wants to participate. There are kayaks which were a blast as well as catamarans if you want to do that. My son, daughter and I did kayaking and we had a blast. These activities you can do as part of the all inclusive aspect for one hour each day. There are a ton of chairs on the beach under palapas to shade you from the blazing sun. If you're a beach person, make sure to get your chairs early.
The pool was our favorite place to be. Not busy at all, plenty of chairs. We met some lovely people there and had a chance to choose chairs each day that were partially in the sun and also under trees / palapas to shade us from the hot sun as the days went on. We were near the swim up bar so it was easy to hydrate. By the pool, make sure to watch the small birds fly into the palapa thatched roof of the bar. They fly in and out all day long. They're very fun to watch. The pool is spotless and they clean it starting early in the morning. They scrub it by hand, vacuum it each morning and wait hand and foot the entire day if something were to drop in the water, so they'll skim it clean. There are plenty of places to actually sit in the pool, we called them "shelves", to enjoy your beverage or just lay down and take the sun. The pool was never "packed" and there were always some chairs available even during the better part of the day. A couple of days it actually rained for a brief while. Before we knew it, we were back out at the pool again.
I used the gym three days of our stay. Lots of free weights and machines, along with a cardio room and a room for yoga / medicine balls / ropes. Clean and plenty of towels available along with fresh, cold filtered water. Bring your own water bottle. The gym was never too busy and I was able to get in all the time, usually in the mornings before my day started.
The towel place is in the same blue building as the gym. They're always willing to swap out wet towels for new ones. Super friendly staff there as well. We always made sure swap out our towels a little before 5 PM each day. This way, we could head back to our rooms, with fresh dry towels for the next day.
We absolutely loved going down to the lobby each night, sit / lie down on one of the relaxing "bedlike" chairs. We enjoyed listening to music each night. Near the bar as well. They also had staff walking around taking orders. Make sure to ask for a bowl of popcorn as well. Super fun snack as you sit listening to music and taking everything in. You may actually spot a gecko crawling up the wall as well. Tons of fun and lots of fun and interesting people who also just want to relax and listen to some music.
We asked the photographers to take some family photos of us while we were there. We are so glad they did. Estarling, Javier and the other staff were fantastic. Buy prints or have them send you a digital copy by e-mail. They did a super job, they have a truly artistic eye, and they made it fun to take some family pictures on vacation. The photo store is in the lobby and have a wide variety of hours during the day. Make sure to schedule a photo session before you leave. The pictures truly are wonderful keepsakes and a great way to remember your time there.
The personal concierges at the hotel are there to help you with whatever you need. Danny Moreno was ours and was readily accessible and helpful when we needed to talk with him. And if he was off duty, another concierge was always happy to help. Marisol was fantastic and gave us some good recommendations as well dealing with our transfer back to the airport. Thank you to both Danny and to Marisol.
The hotel is amazing! The grounds are spotless and beautiful. The wildlife around the property makes the experience so much more fun and enjoyable. Lots of places to walk, sit down, spend time and relax. Benches in a lot of places, there is a gazebo with comfy seating, they even have some outdoor seating near a place to pick up a book or magazine (check the outdoor bookcases). Everywhere you turn, there is something else to look at. Each of the buildings has a different architectural design and decor, but each one reminds you of an old hacienda.
Each room has two bottles in which you can go to the filtered water dispenser on each floor. This water is for drinking, brushing teeth, filling your own bottles with this water is perfect if you just want to sit with some water down at the beach or pool. Fill your bottles as much as you want / need. Two are in each room and make it very easy to bring filtered water back to your room.
The grounds are lovely. The hotel is amazing. But what really makes this place what it is, is the staff. Hands down. No matter if you're at the pool, in the room, at one of the bars or restaurants, the lobby, the theater, the staff will always be available to you and your family, to make your stay that much more memorable. I want to name members of the staff that helped to make our visit to Bayahibe that much more incredible.

There really is no other word other than "superior" to describe this hotel property. My family and I cannot say enough about it and highly recommend it if you are looking for a family / couples getaway. There are not a lot of Americans there and we wanted that. Lots of Argentinians, Chileans, Colombians and Peruvians, which were perfectly fine for us. Some Europeans as well.
I would say get a private transfer from PUJ if flying into there. Private is worth the extra money. If you are able to do so, I would highly recommend flying into LRM (connection from MIA). I believe the hotel is no more than 15 minutes away from LRM.
If you don't speak Spanish, you can get by. Staff is friendly and helpful. They don't speak English well or a lot. Speaking Spanish will help you immensely. As I speak it fluently, it made our time at the Iberostar that much easier to truly enjoy ourselves without the linguistic challenges that face some travelers. I would also recommend bringing a wad of $1 bills. A little bit goes a very long way. It may not seem big to you to leave a $2 or $3 tip, but that is a huge deal for these workers. Your gesture will go a long way and you will be appreciated beyond any imagination.
There are not enough amazing things to say about the Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus. Just a truly wonderful and memorable time away with family. We most definitely will remember our experience in Bayahibe.
One of the best Hotels I have ever stayed in
Aug 01, 2022
In this review, I'll primarily go into the things I didn't like so much because I think the positive aspects have been mentioned often enough in other reviews, so I will keep it short with the positive things.
The food at the buffet is absolutely top notch as well as the service at the buffet (thanks to Angel, Hario, Viktor and the rest of the team for the excellent service at the buffet).
The rooms are always very clean and if there are any problems the team is always ready to help and fix them in almost record time. Also, they only serve branded alcohol so nothing cheap to be afraid of.
The general look of the facility is fantastic every day you see the gardener squad doing everything so that everything looks as neat as possible that is just amazing. The staff is super friendly and helpful that is just great.
The entertainment is varied and ranges from live acrobatic shows at noon by the pool to archery and bingo.
The beach is very clean as well as the sea and brown algaes as in Punta Cana are not a probleme here.
So really everything you can expect from a 5 star hotel.
Now to the things that I did not like.
First, there are the prices of the spa area. These are just completely insane with up to 540 USD for a massage (duration about 2h50). Very sad to see something like this in such a great hotel.
My main criticism, however, goes to the theme restaurants. The atmosphere is not really there, the staff is always friendly but the service at the buffet is much better in comparison.
The food in the Mexican was ok but I have experienced better Mexican restaurants in other hotels in the Dominican Republic with fewer stars.
The Japanese was also ok but after the show of the chef was over it was pretty quickly boring. The food was also all in all good but it is not to everyone's taste. The steakhouse is also alright but it is more of an Italian restaurant than a steakhouse. The steaks we ate were ok but sometimes a bit tough (we took the Tinderlion). The same applies here as for the other restaurants, namely that the atmosphere was very dull and boring. Other hotels do this better.
Parts of the dishes offered in the theme restaurants can be found from time to time in the normal buffet, so what is the reason to go there when you can eat the same food at the buffet?
The most pointless thing by far, however, is when you try to order wine in the theme restaurants: At the buffet there is always house wine which is free of charge if you want you can buy more expensive wines at extra cost. In the theme restaurants this is not possible if you want wine you have to pay the free option of house wine does not exist here.
In addition, the menus are only available digitally via Qr-code, there is no printed map. The whole thing is part of the sustainability concept of the hotel but a printed one will not kill the world.
In addition, you are very often referred to the VIP program of the hotel which costs 55 USD per person per day and promises minimal benefits. From my point of view, it makes no sense to buy it because the benefits are too small unless you get it for free with the Iberostar Gold membership which is often offered to you. Same goes for feedback, you are asked (via the staff on the beach, at the buffet, via e-mail, QR-code on the room etc...) for it almost every day so it really gets on your nerves. Do not get me wrong feedback is good and important but if you ask for it please do it at the end of the vacation when I am able to give feedback and not 2 days after arrival.
The bar at the lighthouse closes too early for my taste it would be very nice if you could watch the sunset from 7pm with a drink but unfortunately the bar closes at 6pm.
Lastly I would like to point out that hardly anyone speaks English the staff always do their best but communication is sometimes really difficult. Of course I don't expect everyone to speak perfect English but having at least one employee per area who speaks half English would be nice.
All in all I woud recommend the hotel!
