Iberostar Grand Bavaro in the age of Covid and Seaweed
Jul 25, 2021
Just returned from a week in Punta Cana Iberostar Grand Bavaro. I’ll try to answer some of the questions I had before I went. Firstly the bottom line- the stay, the resort, the staff are wonderful. We had a fabulous time.
The staff are so friendly and helpful. They all seem to have fun at their jobs which makes the stay so nice. Everyone has had the grouchy inattentive employee to deal with, you won’t find that here. You just won’t. From your Butler’s (who act as your personal concierges - ours were Leo and Alberto and they were great) to the bartenders to the men busting their butts keeping the gardens so pretty everyone has a smile and an “hola” and will do anything they can to satisfy your every wish.
Covid- after a brief temp check upon arrival guests can go maskless. Some still choose with wear them, most don’t. The exception was at the buffets where guests are required to mask up at the food stations. Staff wear masks all the time with few exceptions. You really learn what smiling eyes are. The resort was not at full capacity during third week July 2021 but is moving in that direction so I am told. this was my first time I didn’t have anything to compare it to but chatting with other guests, most of whom seemed to be multiple timers, there are a few minor adjustments in the way things work due to Covid but noting that took away from the stay. Hotel arranged our required covid test to come home (US) and it took 20 min start to finish. Results emailed in less than an hour. Easy
Seaweed- yep it’s one of the worst years. From the DR to the Yucatán it’s out there. They do their best tractor raking the beach but it’s there. One of our days it was lighter and I went into the water for a while but it’s a hindrance. That said, some beaches apparently don’t have as much and at the Iberostar grand it was different day to day so who knows. People still enjoyed the beach laying out and watching the boats and waves but a lot of water time wasn’t possible when we were there. We had Little if any of the smell I’ve seen others deal with.
Pools- perfect. Not crowed. Social if you want that (especially bar area) but plenty of space to have privacy if you want that. Pool bar is open and the bartenders are the best. They’re not serving at the “swim up” portion (covid) but it’s the same bar, the guys are just working the top level not the bottom.
Tons of activities going on. We didn’t partake in much because we were having such a good time relaxing. Entertainment nightly was way better than I expected, we really enjoyed the variety of music.
Food- very good but menus could give a little better description of items. All the menus are QR code online.
Rooms- very nice. Bring your own tp if softness is important to you but that’s pretty nit picking.
Travel- Arriving at Punta airport is easy finding our arranged transportation was easy (we used Apple). Departing is a little hairier and a lot of the process is outside in the heat so plan accordingly. American Airlines was a nightmare but that’s a different story. Can’t wait to go back to Iberostar Grand Bavaro (on Delta).

This was our first time visiting the Iberostar Grand in the Dominican! We’ve previously visited the Grand in Mexico and Jamaica! Iberostar never disappoints! We love the food, the decor, our room, the drinks and so much more! The people are so helpful and do such a fantastic job making sure you have the most fun and relaxing vacation you’ll ever have! There’s always an activity going on or you can just relax by the pool or beach! .
We most certainly will return to Iberostar Grand Bavaro!
