Good Trip so far!

Viva Wyndham Maya is an amazing and affordable resort for all ages, as of me writing this on July 2 2022 I still have 9 more days at this resort. #1 The beach, the beach is gross it’s embarrassing actually. The water has so much seaweed that the water is black, they have tried to fix this problem but they gave up after a couple of days. It’s extremely obvious that no one here takes care of this beach, luckily the Riu next door takes amazing care of their beach and the water there is Krystal Clear. #2 The pools, The pools here are huge and are extremely fun. There are 4/5 pools at this resort, including an adults only pool. Although the pools are good this resort again needs to clean the pools!! There is always stuff in the pools and it does not get cleaned! Another problem with these pools is that they are warm. It is always 30+° here so it’s not very pleasant to go in a pool with warm water. #3 The Staff/entertainment team, The staff is definitely the highlight of my experience so far. They are amazing kind people that listen to you and are always making sure that everything is ok, I just want to shout out the entertainment team. This is the best entertainment we have ever had at any resort the show on July 1st was PHENOMENAL! I really loved the Bruno Mars performance it was just amazing! Even the night before, the game show was super funny and it got everyone included. Other than night time they always have Water Zumba classes and one day they even put music and giant floats in the pool. The photography team is also amazing! #4 The food, The food here is actually pretty good. It’s the bare minimum you would expect from any resort. One thing I would do is mix up the foods everyday, you get tired of the same food everyday. #5 Wifi, the wifi is pretty good. Nothing special BUT from room 3316 (the room I am in) the wifi only works near the patio. #6 The rooms, the rooms are always cleaned and they are pretty nice, the only thing I don’t like about it is the open washroom and how the doors to the shower and toilet are frosted clear. It’s a huge lack of privacy but it’s really not that big of a deal #7 Other mentions, This resort also has Hammocs

Underwhelming at best

We are here at the Viva Wyndham Maya resort and I usually wait to rate the resort until I’ve had the complete stay, however I feel compelled to share the experience. We are here for a total of 14 days. We were ready to come home only a few days into our stay. We are not fussy or picky people and are generally appreciative of every experience however this resort needs to do some serious work to bring this property up to standards and expectations of a 4 star resort. The good aspects: resort is stunning. It truly feels like a tropical oasis; beautiful grounds, lush jungle-like feel all around the resort. Many amenities such as entertainment, bicycles, gym, kids areas (we didn’t have kids here but there are a variety of services for children and families), archery, trapeze, tennis, water activities(kayaks, etc). We enjoyed the entertainment and bicycles. The resort is clean and grounds well maintained. Service in the a la carte restaurants is good. The bad: The shuttle service at the airport was disorganized and chaotic. We waited around for almost two hours for our shuttle to get organized and arrive. Then we did the milk run from resort to resort dripping off guests. Not a big deal had we known in advance and could prepare (e.g. use the washrooms before we left, grab a beverage etc. for the long ride). We may have elected to take a private transfer however it was quite costly. The check in process at the resort was also disorganized and lengthy. Took well over an hour and there were only a few people in line. I never understood why it took so long except that the staff were not efficient and things were not well prepared in advance. It took almost 3-4 hours to get to the hotel and get checked in. Unacceptable. The food is the worst we have ever experienced in an all-inclusive resort. The buffet food is basic, mostly always the same thing every day and at every meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner), very little variety. They do not do a good job of replenishing items once they are gone. Especially popular items such as bread or soups. There are not a lot of options for fruit, and none that you can peel/eat - all are pre-prepared which is problematic if you are not feeling well and are trying to minimize risk of contamination. The service is mediocre at best in the buffet. My husband and I have both been sick for days due to the food. We are not big drinkers so we know this is not a factor. The a la carte restaurants are not good, especially the Italian. The food was disgusting, we couldn’t eat it. It was not prepared properly, so salty and it looked and tasted like it had sat around for a long time. Because we were here for 14 days we had access to 6 a la carte reservations and only ate in 3. We cancelled the rest for fear of poor food preparation, quality and potential contamination. The 24-hour snack bar is barely edible, except for the French fries which are not something we normally eat. The resort must do a better job with hygiene, food preparation and quality. The fountain dispensers with various juices and filtered water all have a strange aftertaste. It was so disappointing. The rooms are plain and a bit dated but the air conditioning works decently. Beds are quite uncomfortable but not a deal breaker. There are dispensers for body wash and shampoo but that’s it. No other toiletries or small bottles or lotions etc. available. No bottled water in the room except for the first day, and one bottle each. There are water refill stations on each floor but the water is warm, not chilled. The cleaning staff do a great job. The beach shoreline is sadly full of sargassum which is a natural phenomenon and is something that is likely here to stay. The sheer amount of it piles up and starts to decompose and smells of rotten eggs. You can smell it from half way down the resort to the beach. So sad. The water area in front of the resort is also full of sargassum so it’s not good for swimming as the water is black with it. Thankfully the neighbouring Riu resorts on either side of this resort do a much better job removing it so at least the shoreline is somewhat cleared up and there are pockets of clear water you can access and swim in. The saddest part is you look at old photos of the area and see the clear beaches and crystal blue water, and you can see just how beautiful it once was. The resort could do a better job of clearing the sargassum away from the beach front as the other resorts do. From what I can tell they make an attempt every three to four days or so, but by then it has accumulated so much that the smell is almost unbearable. We are primarily beach people so this was a huge disappointment for us. The sand on the beach is so soft, powdery and gorgeous. What a shame. There are a variety of pools available: one adult-only, a separate kids play area and pool section , and the main pool. The main pool is packed and very busy with activities and party-goers which is fine if that’s what you are looking for. We stayed mostly at the adult-only pool area which had limited seating but if you got out early enough you could find a place to lounge. The frustrating part was that many individuals neglected the fact that it was an adult-only area and brought children of all ages to this pool. Thankfully security asked them politely to leave after a time. There are a lot of other spaces for families to enjoy, so we could never quite understand why these people would choose to disregard the rules so blatantly. Very disrespectful to those guests looking for an adult-only, quiet space to relax. This resort has a members only service (Viva Club) which affords them various upgraded amenities such as a separate upgraded beach area (better loungers and palapas), and access to cabanas at the adult-only pool. At one point they were enforcing that regular guests could not use these amenities but then became more lax about it. These aspects didn’t affect our stay at all. We enjoyed walking the beach (despite the smell) to Playa del Carmen and 5th Avenue. Lots to explore and see here and for those with mobility issues it is a short cab ride. There are a couple of interesting Mayan archeological ruins along the way to explore at no cost. Overall the Playacar and Playa del Carmen area is lovely, and you can see why in its hay day it was appropriately named the Mayan Riviera. We did spend a day trip to Cozumel by taking the ferry across which is centrally located in Playa del Carmen. Inexpensive to cross and convenient. Just be sure to purchase tickets from the authorized ferry agents at the ferry terminal as there are many that try to sell you tickets along the way. I’m not sure if these were legit or if the ferry companies would honour these tickets but the prices were somewhat inflated so beware. We booked a private all inclusive beach day use resort in advance on the Island of Cozumel and the beach, service and food was excellent. Highly recommend doing this to at least enjoy some pristine beach time. This will be our last vacation to this area sadly because of the beach. We will also never stay at another Wyndham resort for fear we experience similar poor quality. We did try to make the best of it but when you become sick due to poor food quality and contamination it makes it difficult to enjoy the vacation to its fullest. Ultimately there is a lot this property can do to improve these negative aspects and it would go a long way toward improving the stay for their ‘valued’ guests.
