The Iberostar Quetzal resort is located along the sandy beaches and clear waters of the Yucatan Peninsula. Enjoy your day relaxing on the beach under the sun or in a variety of sporting activities available for all ages.
Tequila tres generationas is the best tequila bar and Marcus is the best tequila guide!
This is not our first Iberostar visit, but for sure this is the best one so far. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is so friendly.
Laid back family vacation July 2021
(Saint Louis, Missouri)
Jul 30, 2021
After a long day of travel (hot weather, rainy weather, a 90 minute ride from airport) our party of 4 adults and 2 kids were greeted with cold drinks and smiles. Janire, our personal concierge, explained the hotel layout, restaurants, and mask rules. She arranged our dinner reservations for the week. She also pre-registered us for the Covid tests and made our appointments for the appropriate day. We vehemently declined her invitation to breakfast the next morning to discuss their vacation club. However, Janire continued to be helpful through out our stay as questions did arise about early breakfast prior to departure, vendor hours, and activity schedules. Thank you Rock Star Janire!
The hotel accommodations are a little outdated but we still found them comfortable. The safes in our 2 rooms were not working when we arrived but were quickly corrected within 15-20 minutes by hotel maintenance. We had basic rooms with adequate space for hanging clothes but no drawer space. In-room refrigerators were stocked daily with no issues. If you have lots of electronic devices, you made need to charge them at different times due to lack of electrical outlets.
This hotel offers glass containers in each room and purified water and ice dispensers in each building. I very much prefer this method for supplying water to guests. No plastic bottles, no waste, and no waiting for someone to bring water to your room.
The pool is very large and has lots of available seating and tiki huts for shade. Towel cards are distributed at check in and must be returned at check out. The pool exchange room may close before the pool does, but you can always exchange them the next day or use them to stake out your chairs by the pool the next morning.
The pool averages a 5 foot depth so be sure to bring floaties for the kids or vertically challenged adults. I was able to find one section of the pool that was 4.5 feet deep that was much more to my liking. The pool also becomes very warm from the extreme sunshine and high temperatures. There is an adults only pool that stays cooler but it may be crowded with rowdies by late afternoons.
The primary restaurant is the buffet (only 3 ala carte restaurant visits were allowed). The main buffet food was pretty much redundant but there were multiple options for most diets. I never found a lack of fruit, vegetables, breads, gluten-free options and main entrees. My spouse enjoyed the authentic Mexican offerings. Desserts were ok but not 5 star.
Indoor dining buffet style was available (masks and cover ups required) by the pool. Again, the menu was pretty standard but the quality was good. One can also eat outside the restaurant at the walk up snack bar or by the ice cream stand. Every day there would be a different hot cooked (i.e. tacos) item available at lunch time.
The Bonsai Japanese hibachi restaurant was hands down our favorite. Our second fave was the Italian restaurant (which we thought has the best desserts). Our least favorite was the steakhouse. The entrees were tough and pretty tasteless. We would have tried the Mexican restaurant but it was closed for renovations.
We all looked forward to evening entertainment and were mostly impressed. The theatre venue is open air with drink service. There is an 8:30 p.m. show and a 9:30 show. If you have a room near the theatre, you may want to bring some ear plugs. You can hear a replay of the first show without leaving your room.
We reserved this hotel knowing that the Playacar area and beach is usually pristine. However, the seaweed in summer 2021 has been horrendous. The hotel cleared the stuff as fast and faithfully as possible but there were times when it was not attractive to jump into the water. However, a few days we found times to swim past the sea weed hugging the beach and get out far enough to enjoy some blue water and waves.
Overall, we found the Iberostar Quetzal to be a great place for a family vacation with friendly service, a variety of foods, lots of kids and adult activities, unlimited ice cream and drinks (not all premium brands), few beach vendors, and gorgeous jungle scenery with no lack of animal sightings (waterfalls, flamingoes, cranes, cavies, codies, and especially the howler monkeys). Enjoyed! If you don't mind doing a little walking to get your own drinks I think you will enjoy it as well.
