2 weeks at Bella Costa

Elke W (Courtenay, Canada) on Jan 25, 2023

Stayed at the Bella Costa for 2 weeks. Its been 28 years since I've been to Varadero. We arrived in the dark. Check in was easy and the staff friendly. Once we reached our room 326 it has a small musty smell but that was gone after a few days. The beds were singles, we paid for a king size) we did get told to come back the next day but since our friends were next door we stayed put. sheets were clean( but i think they need a bleaching or replacements. Pillows are long ours were flat and need replacing. The bathroom was big, Shower worked well but you need to be able to climb up into the tub in order to shower. I'm 5ft so getting in was easy out not as much little hop down. our shower the curtain was way to short to cover everything so we flooded the floor our first day, asked our maid for extra towels to help mop it up. Our maid was so lovely we tipped her everyday and left her gifts She ensured our room was clean, she made us animals and hearts from the towels and blankets Always had tp no face clothes or hand towels but we did get a bath mat the rest of our time there. Food at the resort was ok understanding they too are going through massive supply issues as well as everyone in the world. If you remember where you are and where they get their supplies from you will be better off. You will not go hungry by any means, Plenty off food at breaky, lunch and dinner. I did find the food lacking any depth of flavor. Bring some ketchup, salad dressing or jam, peanut butter if your wanting anything like that. You get use to it , i did get tired of the bland food but never went hungry. Dessert was great not super sweet. ice cream everyday. Almost all the staff are super friendly and will always try to make your vacation a good memory. Only found a few grumpy workers . Tipping sure helps I tipped the coffee servers and i always had hot coffee. Coffee at breakfast was great, super dark but add milk and sugar. No shortage of pasta, again the sauce lacked depth of flavor just tomato sauce They had burgers sometimes beef and sometimes pork- but i brought ketchup for that reason and oh my they were great. one day there was fries. The flat bread pizza was Great. my fav was the garlic bread one. The beach is amazing, water warm and inviting. The beach was clean but after a massive storm it ended up full of garbage but around the beach chair area it was cleaned up. My friend is much picker than me when it comes to food and she said she would come back to that hotel and Cuba. My honest opinion i would stay here again bring my own condiments Ketchup, salad dressing etc. don't for get your suntan lotion, toothpaste , toothbrush etc. as you cant really find it there. Ask you maid if you did my luggage was lost for 2 days and she told me if it didn't come to let her know she would help me out. Her name was Idalmis she truly was lovely and we got to know here over our 2 weeks at the hotel. Lower your expectations You will love the beach the people and Cuba Go to Havana, eat out in town take an adventure.

Incredible hotel

ferran68 (Madrid, Spain) on Jan 24, 2023

We have been spending a few days in this incredible hotel and we return delighted. The rooms are spacious, modern and clean. The food is very varied and of high quality. The beach is spectacular, the super romantic sunsets,... but what we liked the most was the entertainment team, we especially highlight Franky's professionalism and command of languages. Without a doubt, a hotel worthy of recommendation.

Repeat customer and will be again

First time back since January 2020. This is our 6th time in Cuba and 5th time back at Bella Costa. Fantastic time even with all the supply issues in Cuba. The Good - Some of the best beach in Varadero, great views, looked like our beds were brand new, better beach access on both sides of the beach restaurant for those mobile challenged, really liked the new foot washer at the beach, new music area. No longer using plastic water bottles in the rooms and instead have refillable glass bottles, tape sealed/dated with filtered water. Buffet food was good, never went hungry. Many different groups/bands played throughout the week. The young men running the pool/beach activities have an amazing amount of positive energy. The $5 hop on/off bus now comes right to the front door of the hotel! The ok - Buffet didn't change too much day to day, but Cuba is still recovering from supply issues. Not sure where the toaster went, but could ask a chef to toast on a grill. Ran out of coke towards the end of one day in the lobby bar. Coffee in the buffet only at breakfast, rest of the time needed to go to the lobby coffee bar for a cappuccino. Bathroom fixtures and furnishing in the rooms are still dated (again, Cuba supply issues) but functional. Quite a few new staff, some much younger so still learning the hospitality industry. The old wicker furniture in the lobby bar area has been replaced with some new couches but the cushions are not commercial grade so a bit too soft. Some people are not fans of the chairs in Mirador (outdoor restaurant), but probably unaware that they are part of the Cuban culture/history and called Taburete. You'll see them in town as well. The bad - As amazing as the beach is, there seemed to be far more trash including cans and glass, not sure if due to recent storms (big cold front hit when we arrived and stayed for 2.5 days). The coffee bar on the backside of the lobby bar is still the smoking section (we don't smoke...). Hot water and water pressure on the 6th floor was lacking until the last two days (Note: we were offered a room on a lower floor that was working better, but opted to stay as we like the room and view). The jacuzzies were cold (heaters broken) but known by the hotel and being worked on. Railings in the hotel stairwell have some sharp edges (cut aluminum round tubing). Elevators worked but showing their age. Upcoming plans as told by management - Wall in the lobby coffee bar area to create more separation from the smokers (though I wish they'd find a more outdoor area). Plans to create a coffee bar area by the pool to enjoy your morning brew. Plans to begin renovating the lower floors (needed). Management is very receptive to input. New QR codes around the hotel to scan as they are looking for customer feedback. Need something? Just ask! Sad to see some long time staff have moved on or moved away, but still feels like a second home. This is one of the older hotels in Varadero, so yes, it's dated, but it's charm is location ($10cup or $15cdn cab to town), everything on the resort is a minute or two walk away (hotel, bungalows, food, bars, beach), lineups at the buffet are maybe 5-10 people tops, and management and staff are super friendly and make you feel welcome. Gracias Bella Costa!

Beach amazing, Resort okay

M7509IAjuliaf on Jan 12, 2023

This was my first time in Cuba. I was really not prepared for the difference in quality compared to a Mexican resort, which is what I’m accustomed to. Varadero beach is absolutely amazing, the family loved it, it was the highlight. The resort is dated. The rooms are spacious. We stayed in the big rooms at the back of the resort. Toilet paper was very scarce, some days we got a fresh bottle of water, some days not. Toilets worked well, no shampoo or conditioner, flaking, rundown bath tub, half working shower head. Rooms were cleaned daily- 2 little double beds. Food- it’s okay. The main dining room is very large, loud, and zero ambience. We had difficulty booking a reservation at the restaurants as they booked up quickly. By the pools in the center of the resort is where the ‘entertainment’ is- which is loud, booming, crappy hip hop/ dance music, non stop all damn day. The ‘snack bar’ was lacking. They ran out of stuff quickly. The food there was terrible in my estimation. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner had many options. NOTE: there are no snacks, no sunscreen, no basics of any kind available at the hotel. We we’re hungry a lot. No chips, no candy or chocolates bars. The staff are lovely- they were so accommodating and fun. Overall- it’s all about the beach, it’s freakin gorgeous, it’s hot, but it ain’t all that!

Friendly but small

Gumbo32 (Toronto, Canada) on Jan 10, 2023

This resort is very small our group consisted of 22 people reception was fast and friendly thanks to Olga who managed to put all our rooms on the same floor. It was very much appreciated, but we did not get our rooms till 3:30 pm. I think the worst thing about this resort were the rooms. Everything worked but the sheets and towels didn’t seem very clean and the blankets in the closet had a really bad stench to them. The pool was a little smaller than I anticipated as well. Now the good the beach is simply amazing but you need to get there quick because all the beach chairs disappear very quickly because the resort was fully booked. The snack bar and the lunch buffet was very good only bad thing about the main buffet was the long line ups to get omelet's or even pasta. There was one server who worked both buffets that was simple amazing and her name was Anyeli always smiling and very helpful. Overall this was a good resort during the day but bad during the sleeping hours because of the rooms. Would I come back? That is undecided.
