The scholarship, which is facilitated by the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) Canada and Captain Thomson’s family, recognizes outstanding female aviators who demonstrate her passion for aviation, leadership and commitment to advancing women in the industry. Captain Thomson dedicated 16 years of service to WestJet, leaving a lasting impact on colleagues and the organization. Widely respected not only for her aviation expertise but also for her advocacy on behalf of pilots, she was a strong voice within the airline and a mentor to women pursuing careers in aviation. “Captain Thomson’s leadership, unwavering advocacy and dedication to her colleagues exemplify the very best of WestJet, and this scholarship is a fitting tribute to her extraordinary contributions,” said Samantha Taylor, WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Experience Officer. “The impact she had on so many of our colleagues and on our company is profound and I have been deeply inspired by the stories shared about her legacy.” The 2025 scholarship has been awarded to Afrah Khan and Elitza Nikolova, two promising aviators whose achievements and ambitions embody the values Captain Thomson championed throughout her career. “Captain Thomson was a trusted voice for our pilots and a champion of women in aviation,” continued Taylor. “We are confident that Afrah and Elitza will carry her torch forward with the same passion and courage.
