After reading a bunch of reviews I was a little nervous about coming here, but my husband and I had a lovely stay. This is a much smaller resort with 1 pool and bar, so do expect a little wait for drinks and food. It is definitely much busier over the weekend, so get to the buffet early. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Food was tasty, a bit repetitive, but it was a good buffet with traditional dishes with lots of beans and rice. Our room was perfect for our stay, it was clean and was right next to the beach/ocean. We thought the COVID protocols were overkill for a mostly outdoor resort, so don't forget your mask here. It is a nice 10 minute walk to the city. We booked our return COVID test and our fun adventure tours with the Side by Side group under the canopy by the pool. The beach is nice, not a place to swim with the tides, but lots of surfing.

My wife, 2 daughters (6 and 3) and myself enjoyed 2 weeks in Costa Rica at Dreams Las Mareas (4 star all inclusive) after our time there was up we decided to extend our vacation and change location. We found the occidental on Expedia and thought it looked to be a good standard 4 star resort with all inclusive. Once we arrived there was no valet or bell staff to help u load the car full of cases, the young girl at the welcome podium didn’t even acknowledge that we’d arrived as she was too preoccupied on her phone. We had booked a two bed suite and upon receiving our keys from a sorry to say but very not welcoming receptionist a bell boy helped transport our luggage to the room. The receptionist had given us a one bed room which the bell boy informed us he knew this but gave it to us anyway. After walking back to the reception we then received another room which was with 2 beds but on the ground floor. The locks on the doers looked old and worn and the garden was right behind the snack bar so the place smelt like McDonald’s. To top it off the “garden” on the room was used as a short cut to the beach by other guests so we didn’t feel particularly safe with our little ones, on top of this the safe in the room didn’t work either. After complaining once more at reception we were offered another room but once more the standard was not reflective of the images we saw on the website, the rooms were dark with poor lighting with questionably locks on the balcony doors. At this point I asked to speak to the manager to get a refund as we wanted to change our reservation to another hotel. The manager then showed us one last room with 3 beds but the standard was I fortunately the same, even the patio furniture that is on the balconies was filthy. I explained to the manager at the time that I appreciated her support but we weren’t happy and wanted to move on and have a refund. She was fine with this but explained that we have to call Expedia as she can’t help us. To top all this off the pool and dining areas were extremely dated and didn’t reflect at all what was advertised on the Internet We then moved on to another hotel. It’s been 10 days since the reservation as I’m writing this review and Expedia haven’t been able to contact the hotel, we’ve tried multiple times to speak to the resort again but there is never someone available to speak to us and no one ever calls us back. I could not recommend this hotel to anyone if your looking for a 4 star standard for you and your family.

friendly hotel, close to the city. little choice of food but tasty and fresh. delicious drinks made in the bar are lying in the ocean, by a waiter with a fair complexion (I don't remember the name). poor wifi but that's nothing. most of the service nice and polite.

The hotel manager has fired a significant number of staff, who while doing their best, simply can’t fulfill expectations to the quality expected. Food is regular, and in some cases just plain bad. The Italian restaurant is absolutely terrible in service and food quality. One does not expect to have to do long lines to ask for a drink and to just have one bar available and no alcoholic drinks available to order at the restaurant. They don’t even provide hand towels unless requested. The music throughout the hotel is loud and far from relaxing. Me and my family will never go again. And I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, specially if you care about how they treat their staff!

Average Stay, Many pros and cons

For starters, this was my first time staying at an all inclusive resort. I was traveling with families with children and they felt it would be best to have everything there (the bar crew laughed when I tried to hand my card to them to pay for drinks!). I will start with the pros: The views from the beach are truly priceless! The more private secluded end of the beach really made the time relaxing more enjoyable as there were not a ton of people trying to walk up to you and sell you something every 5 minutes. The sunsets at night were amazing. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful in all areas of the hotel and receptive to any requests. Plus, it was nice they helped with your spanish if you're trying to practice. They also set up covid tests exactly when we needed it prior to our departure. The pool was huge and they also always had open chairs. Cons: The rooms were okay. Our first night we got there we didn't have pillowcases on the pillows and you could see the stains. I am sure it was an oversight but definitely sort of grossed us out. There was no mat for the shower which isn't a huge deal but since there is a half glass door the water would get outside and it's not fun to step on super wet floors. I did have to ask for extra towels but they were receptive to getting them to the room quickly. One of the biggest issues for me was the wifi. I know Costa Rica is vacation and Pura Vida but I was under the impression wifi would be accessible and I had work I needed to attend to and was unable to access any of my work. At best there was one area in the lobby that sometimes got internet but do not expect to get in the rooms. The cafeteria was pretty decent some of the food was spectacular and others not in particular the snack bar at the pool was just not good. I did appreciate the level of attention to covid precautions and security they had at the hotel. I think if you are looking to just stay in one place and have it all there this is your place but there were nights it was much better to go into town and experience the Tamarindo scene which was easy for us since we had a car. I really would have preferred to give 3.5 stars but it wouldn't let me. I say this because staying here is not a total no go for me ever again but I probably might go somewhere else but I would miss the convenience of the all inclusive buffet. Also just an FYI if you book adventures through the hotel its about 30% at least price increase and you can just go into town and get a better deal.
