**Comprehensive review alert ** Let me start by saying Wow. I am not a hotel and even less of an all inclusive type of traveller. We usually only do airbnbs and restaurants because we like to feel like locals and have all the amenities of home available to us. That being said I was thoroughly impressed by this resort. The styling and landscaping are gorgeous throughout the property. The spaces are huge and there are many places to congregate comfortably outdoors with your group throughout , making Covid-19 essentially a non worry for most of the stay. Our favorites were the fire pits with after dinner drinks and coffee in the afternoon overlooking the property from the hanging chair pods. I noticed staff cleaning all the seating areas constantly at regular intervals. A mask is required for guests in all shared public spaces except when sitting at your pool or beach chair/ dining table. If someone went without, staff politely handed them a mask to wear. The staff : staff are fully geared with protective eye wear, masks and gloves at all times. I commend the resort for strictly applying this and the staff for enduring this in the heat. The staff are super friendly, always greeting everyone in a friendly manner and being available at all times, we never had to ask for a drink or anything else, there was always someone making their rounds and asking us if we wanted something. I have seen other reviewers speaking of staff shortages, I did not have that experience at all, on the contrary. We did visit after spring break and the resort was at approx 40% occupancy (so that may have hd something to do with that ?). Special mention to Francisco who came around at the beach to see if we wanted to book a tour - which we did ( scape park/zip line- great btw). Benjamin the activities guy who remembered all our names and came by wherever we were sitting daily to let us know what were the activities ( kid and adult) for the day. The grand parents even gave the aquagym a try! Juan our server at Chinola most days, who would get our drinks ready as soon as he’d see us waiting for our table. Thank you to Gerson for arranging our visit to the onsite Dr’s office ( my daughter developed an ear infection and we needed meds an all clear to fly the next day), the Doctoress was very professional and the consultation was complimentary. We were referred to a specialist at a private clinic 15 min away to assess the situation further and Gerson took care of organizing the cab over there, the Dr called ahead to let them know we were coming, and pushed our covid tests over for the next day. Gerson checked on us when we got back to make sure everything was ok. Thankfully we were ok to fly. Thoroughly impressed by the organization and level of service. The food & beverage: much better than I expected for an all inclusive. There are 4 restaurants at Ziva: The Navigator dinner outdoors( american fusion) Prontoz outdoors( burgers & pizza) lunch Noodles and thread indoors( italian) dinner Tempest table ( asian) indoors dinner Mercado ( buffet style) in/outdoors all day Chinola dinner for everyone & bfast/lunch for club room holders only , outdoors Coffee shop in the open air lobby with donuts and ice cream Twisted timbers bar in the lobby The Rum bar only open at night 1 pool bar 1 pool bar only available to club room holders All served good food. Nothing was extremely good and nothing was bad. I’d say middle of the range to good, with Chinola standing out for their healthy/paleo/vegan options , this is where we had bfast everyday.. Next 2 favorites were Tempest table and Noodles and thread. It’s important to note that you cannot make a reservation at any of the restaurants , it’s a good idea to be first in line for dinner at 6 pm, either eat then or put your name down for the next available table. We were there for 7 nights, and every night that these 2 were open they were full from opening to close. And that was at 40% occupancy. So def get in there when they open at 6! These 2 restaurants do rotate so sometimes one will be open and the other one closed and vice versa, you can ask anyone of the staff to check on this and let u know which one is open when , to plan ahead. It’s important to know that The Zilara and Ziva resorts are connected internally by a walkway, although kids are not allowed into the Zilara property, adults are free to use the facilities there and eat at any of the restaurants there. We ate at both Journeys ( indian- very good! )try to get into a train booth if you can, and Brando’s which is french polynesian ( so so but the decor was really cool). As others have mentioned portions are on the smaller size but that just meant we ordered all the different dishes and got to try basically everything on the menu ;-p Tip: We quickly found out that you should ask for your steak medium rare if you actually want it cooked medium. Out of 7 nights we had 1 experience where they had an off day with the service at one of the restaurants but we just put it down to a bad day. The food was still good and service excellent otherwise. My least favorite was Navigator on the pool deck, the lighting was really dim and the food came out cold. The Pizza at Prontoz was really good, we ordered that to have at the pool/beach for lunch on several occasions. The buffet at Mercado was really good and had many options including vegerarian and vegan and the terrace seating option was great. I’d like to point out that each and everytime we stepped into a restaurant or ordered room service we were asked if anyone in our party had food allergies which we don’t but I can imagine this being a huge + for lots of people. They obviously take it very seriously. The Pool deck: Absolutely gorgeous pool area in the center of the resort with various pool zones, loads of coconut trees, cabanas, shaded areas, large hot tub ( a little too hot IMO) umbrellas, shallow area for kids. The whole place looks really classy and well kept. The chairs are beautiful and comfortable with thick cushions, there were lots of families with babies but it didn’t feel like your typical family resort. The whole place is well put together, well maintained & feels upscale. Excellent service throughout the day with servers constantly coming around to take drink orders. There are pools lining the base of the buildings on both sides , these are the ‘Swim up’ rooms. Looked pretty cool but you could see straight into those rooms on the non club side. There is a pool to one side , bar and hotub reserved for what they call ‘club room’ holders. It’s a bit removed from the main pool so nice if you want a quieter spot as they do have music playing at the main pool from about 11 till 6pm. ( btw: If Ziva is reading this, please note a little variety would be nice ;), I love EDM lounge music but maybe not for 6 hours straight ;) ) ROOM: We booked a ‘ Club Room’ , by my calculations these rooms were about 100$ more a night. I don’t believe they are any bigger than the regular ‘king with sofa bed ‘ rooms, however they do give you access to this ‘ club pool’ which is on the quieter side, premium liquor in the club pool bar and in the club lounge/bar, personal concierges, Bfast and lunch access at Chinola beachside restaurant and to an assigned ‘butler’ who you can address all your questions and requests to during your stay. We found this particularly helpful as it streamlined the process when we had specific requests like laundry, covid test appointment, visit to the onsite clinic for an ailment, something changed in our plans, transportation etc. Depending on who we were speaking to we found that some things sometimes got lost in translation so having the butler as the 1 go to person was really helpful. Special mention to LUIS, our assigned butler who was very professional and met our needs and made sure everything was taken care of! Gracias Luis! He’d pop in at breakfast and check on how everything was going and we could ask him our questions. If we had not seen him he was just a phone call away through any of the hotel phones. The room itself was spacious enough, we had a king size bed for us and a sofa bed for our 2 kids ( under 10). The terrace is a good size, with a round chaise for lounging and chair and table. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom shower is huge, appreciated the toilet being in a separate enclosed room for the rest of the bathroom. There is a cool feature that when you turn the master switch off for the lights there is a sensor that will turn on the ‘mood lighting’ in the bathroom so you can see where you’re going if you get up at night. The sliding doors to the bathroom are a nice feature. There were 2 hanging closets but not much drawer space, they were really shallow so we ended up using the open shelving for some of our clothes. We did have to ask for extra hangers as there were maybe 8 at most for both closets. The whole room design was well thought out the kids loved the lit up marbles in the headboard. The beach: the sand is like flour, the chairs comfortable, the beach boy will set you up and a server will be by regularly to take your drinks order. Very impressed with the level of service. The bay is protected by a net which keeps most of the seaweed out, some makes its way through and they clean it daily. It’s pretty shallow all the way out ( torso deep) the color is beautiful. The Water park: It’s open from 10-5pm, located in its own area at the back of the hotels, open to Ziva and Zilara guests. The lazy river was awesome even the grandparents got it on some of that action. The kids loved the slides. There were life guards constantly monitoring each pool/ slide and one up at the top of the slides, they were on the ball at all times. There is food truck here which serves drinks and snacks, we mostly liked the nachos, the burgers and fries weren’t good. The Watersports The only offer non motorized water sports paddle boards, kayaks and hobbie cat. I’d say there is room for improvement in this department The guys working there could use some training in guest relations/ politeness. They should have a better range in life jacket sizes ( no kid sizes for a family resort) and they should invest in more than 1 hobbie cat for the resort. The list is often full and if is out of order there goes your plan. The clear masking tape on the hobbie cat sail was not the greatest look either. Entertainment: We were a little disappointed by the activities offered at the kids club so much so that the kids barely made use of it. Apart from the last 2 days they set up an inflatable castle by the pool , that looked interesting but when my kids went there they were told it was only for kids club members for the day. We dropped them at the club 1 day for 3 hours but that was it, they played video games ( 7 & 10) I was expecting a bit more arts and crafts and things of that nature. Basically if you want your kids to participate in any of the kids’ activities for that day happening on the property you have to drop them off at the kids’ club directly you cannot just walk in wherever they are at on the property and join in. As far as activities inside the club I think they are more geared towards younger kids up to 6 yo. It’s a good idea to call a day in advance to book your kid(s) in for the day. ( You only know the schedule a day at a time via the TV hotel guide.) a note to the resort: IMO I think knowing the kids club scheduling for the whole week ahead of time would be helpful in planning which days to put them in for. Shows/ evening entertainment are for both Zilara and Ziva guests, the nice thing is that they are outdoors on a stage with cover so you’re not stuck in a closed theater. A + during these times. The acts were ok. A little late for us , after spending all day swimming the kids were too tired ro make the 9:15 show time. We did make an exception for the magic show and the back to the 70- 80-90 love music show. on site rapid Covid testing: you organize it with the concierge or your butler a few days into your stay. You get your appointment , you show up and get it done. Results a couple hours later. For rt-pcr testing you can make arrangements through the resort also but results will take longer . All in all a great choice for a family vacation. The Grand Parents wanted to do this for their 50th wedding anniversary and they were not disappointed. It was everything they expected and much more. As a family with younger children we were thoroughly impressed by the level of service, & different options the resort offered, with all the different areas we found it pretty versatile , everyone could do as they liked and stay happy. Special occasions: I called ahead of time before arrival to see what could be done in their room to mark the special occasion and they informed me that there were complimentary bday and anniversary packages, whereby they hang a sash outside the door saying Happy Bday or Happy Anniversary and they put a bottle of wine inside the room. Which they did. While we were there , there was an intimate wedding that took place, it was beautiful they have an onsite bridal boutique/salon/coordination studio . I’d think this is an ideal solution for a destination wedding. Thank you Ziva Cap Cana and your dedicated staff for a most memorable holiday!

We stayed at Hyatt Zilara the adjoining resort for couples but did water sports at Ziva- so fun! Axel & Domingo (pictures) were great & so nice to my dog (@omegasamoyed). We did all the boating activities with him!
