Great service, great experience

Beautiful and relaxing resort. Our castle swim out suite was perfect. JT was the most helpful butler and enhanced our experience. Spent most nights enjoying the Love bar! Service was impeccable with some of the best bartenders, Darlin,Alnardo, and Adela! We also enjoyed some great food options, with Sushi town being our fav! A must visit resort in DR!
False Advertising and Not a Luxury Collection Standards Property
wilsoncog (Tulsa, Oklahoma) on Mar 23, 2024
This hotel is NOT A LUXURY Collection level hotel. Not even close. To call it this is false advertising. I am a Marriott Titanium member and have traveled in over 100 nations around the world staying in a multitude of exceptional hotels including the nicest of Marriott's properties. This property is not one of them. My Titanium status meant nothing at this property. The Beach area is very small, the ocean is nasty with sea weed and murky water, the service is mediocre, the food is mediocre, the reception desk is the WORST! We wrote ahead asking for an earlier than 3:00 p.m. check in and also applied for an upgraded room and requested that whatever grade the room that we have a bathtub inside the room. When we arrived at around 1:00 p.m. as we noted with the hotel earlier we were told to have a seat (this is their way of stalling you and you will see couples seated everywhere waiting to be served) and our room would be ready shorty. Then we were encouraged to eat lunch while they prepared our room. We were also told that no upgrades were available. After eating lunch at the seafood restaurant we returned to lobby to be told our room was still not ready even though it was after 3:00 p.m. Finally, they got us a room, which was not an upgrade and did not have a bath tub inside, which was our only request for our room. After talking to the front desk or overall manager Francisco--poof--like magic two different upgrade possibilities were offered, which were totally ready and empty. We chose the villa, which was quiet and a bit away from everything. It also had a tub inside which was great. We had consistent problems with the thermostat and AC but still really liked the room for the space and quietness. The restaurants were OK. Not great but not terrible. Best food is the stir fry station at the buffet lunch and the rib-eye steak at the steakhouse. The steakhouse steaks (all we tried) were excellent. I would recommend this. The pool at the castle is one of the quieter spots as the other pools are pretty noisy. The beach area is terrible---cram packed together, terrible ocean situation and basically falsely advertised on web-site. This is a significant and major flaw at this property. Though we met a few cheerful staff at the Sanctuary for the most part the staff seem unhappy and labored to be there from the bell staff to the front desk staff (the worst) people seemed wearied by it all. It was a busy season so they were probably exhausted by the public. Our butler, Argy and some of the host staff at the buffet were very nice and helpful. The hotel has an old world vibe overall and a nice ambience, especially at night. This part was pleasant and relaxing. A couple of days before our scheduled departure the AC went out completely in our villa. We were told this was in the area of the villas as a water line broke. I was golfing that morning and my wife discovered this when she woke up and endured this for a few hours. No one every contacted her about it but she did call to see when it might come back on. She has asthma and the extended heat without AC irritated this a lot. After 7 hours of no AC and no clear understanding of when this might be fixed we decided to check out of the hotel. We had already moved once and since she was having asthma problems I decided to try and catch an earlier flight and get out of DR. Getting out of this hotel was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at any kind of hotel property. Basically, you are made to feel like a prisoner!! After filling out numerous pieces of paperwork, writing out my reasons for checking out early (as if the AC being out for 7 hours was not enough) and wrestling with the front desk team I was finally "allowed" to leave the property. I mean this literally as you had to have permission to leave!!!!!!! I will say that Francisco tried hard throughout this process to help. He seems like a decent man. If you are in a jam with the front desk keep pushing with the front desk ladies (you will have to push) until you can talk to him. This was our first time to Punta Cana or Cap Cana----the pictures on the web are very deceiving. DR is still a two-thirds world culture and is stuck between the old and new systems. If you have never been to a Latin country you will not like DR for a vacation. Too many papers to fill out, steps to go through, lines to wait in and a sense of overregulation everywhere. This is typical for a Latin country but should not be true in a vacation area. The beaches in Cap Cana are inundated with sea weed making them nasty and smelly for the most part. This is especially true at the Sanctuary. I would not return to this hotel and would advise anyone going to Cap Cana to choose another property as there are two or three much nicer properties whose beach is much more expansive, cleaner and nicer including Eden Roc, Secrets Cap Cana and the Hyatt properties there. I would like to request that Marriott please revoke the Luxury Collection designation for this property and relabel it more appropriately. If you are thinking of going here----don't.
