Lovely hotel however not the experience and memories we had hoped for

Colleen W (Renfrew, Canada) on Apr 20, 2024

This was our first stay at the Fairmont. Our kids are going away to college so we wanted one last family trip with them and wanted to splurge a bit. We chose this hotel because it was close to the venues we were visiting over the weekend and needed to be able to go back and forth quickly. The location was perfect. The room was lovely and exactly what we had reserved. We ran into a few issues during our 2 day stay. We had asked for a fridge which was brought up right away however when we took food and drink out on day 2, everything was frozen and things had to be thrown out. Specifically our dairy products. Others were no good to us until they thawed out. We did not touch the climate control as we assumed that it was set to the proper temperature. Most of the groceries were a waste of our money as we had to purchase alternative options and eat out for lunch which we didn't really want to do. We were going to separate locations on the second day so we had asked for 4 key cards knowing our daughters were going to be taking turns, coming back and forth from waiting in line at the Concert Hall. They waited in line for 10 hours and brought chairs and blankets to be more comfortable. When our daughter came back to the room, her key card did not work and even though I had given their name's at the front desk in case of a lost card, she had trouble getting another card because her ID was with her sister. She eventually got into the room but the delay caused anxiety because they were both on a time constraint. We were not told that ID would be needed to get another card otherwise I would have told them to keep it on them. I was not aware that this had happened and when I came back to the room, my card would not work either. I had to go back downstairs for new keys. After supper, we came back to the room once again and found ourselves locked out YET again. And yes, I was using the new keys I had been given. There was a lot of wasted time simply just trying to get into our room. When my husband and I finally got settled again, we decided to go for a night cap in the Library Bar. We knew the girls would be coming back from the concert soon so we asked what time was last call as we knew they would like the atmosphere. We were told the time, enjoyed a drink and then went to meet the girls in the lobby, took them upstairs first to drop some things off and to make sure that they could get into the room. When we went back to the Bar, they told us that it was too late even though we had just left and there was still 25 minutes before last call was supposed to happen. Had I known that was going to happen, I wouldn't have spent a dime earlier. Horrible customer service. On check out day, I asked my daughter to go downstairs and request a trolley for our bags. The man at the bellhop desk was rude and hesitant to give her one. He was asking where she was taking it making her feel uncomfortable like he thought she wasn't trustworthy. If the hotel policy was for staff to bring it to the room then that should have been said instead of making her feel like she did. I made sure to make myself known to him when we got downstairs and explained that he not worry about where it was and that as soon as we load the car, we will give it to Valet staff. Very unprofessional in my opinion. I understand that things happen however for a $450/night, you would think that our stay would not be so riddled with issues. During checkout when asked how the stay was, I did tell them that there were problems. I never asked for any reimbursement because that doesn't really change the fact that our stay was not as pleasant as I had hoped. He did however offer to comp our parking fee which I guess covered the cost of our lost groceries so I appreciate that. It still doesn't change the fact that it wasn't the weekend we had hoped for as a last family trip before the girls move to college, which is a shame. We normally stay at the Marriot when we visit Toronto and it's always lovely. I'm not sure if I would risk a second stay at The Fairmont or not.
