Dissapointing old hotel needing maintenance. This is not a 5-star hotel.

The hotel looks nice from the outside. The pool, beach and garden areas are very nice and well maintained but the rooms are in a very bad condition. Bed sheets were stained and they were not comfortable. The walls and even the ceiling were dirty. Furniture is old and broken. The bathroom is old with traces of rust and mold here and there. It was very dissapointing. The food served in the breakfast and lunch buffet were of low quality and the personnel was always in a hurry. If you choose to stay at this hotel you need to upgrade VIP at the 5th floor (The level). After one night at the standard room, we paid for the upgarde and even then you get the equivalent of a 4-star in Europe.

We went there for our honeymoon and booked The Level (a Suite) which came with a lot of service extras. Currently we are in the middle of our stay and are a little bit disappointed. First of all: the rooms are great (we had the best view you can imagine over Varadero), the food is also very good and quality is very good - especially if you see this in the context of the rest of Cuba (which we have seen since we travelled around 14 days here). They have everything you like and which is even unusual for Cubans to have - like milk (since embargo of trump it’s really hard to get it easy). Now the bad / room for improvement: The pool is not usable for relaxing. The music is always on - same music every day and it’s loud. My gosh it is soo loud. There is a noisy area sign in front of the south part of the pool, but the music is loud everywhere you are able do lay down. Even in our small private booth - which came with the level suite. While animation is on - it’s around 80-90 dbm. Which is totally insane. When turned „down“ on the furthermore spot, it’s still around 60-70. we tried the pool two times and were disappointed so we went to the beach. The beach is not the best in Varadero - we knew this: it’s a smaller part but there are less people and we thought it would be more quit and relaxing as well. No way. Also there is a „noisy area“ and since the beach is quite small - there are only a few spots to escape from music. Sure music is a cultural thing in Cuba and we have seen it really everywhere. But who came for relaxing - not here. Most of the days so far we went to other beaches. And even the party beaches with huge hotels in mid- budget range which are more known for party tourists are not that noisy. Service is most of the time really good - but we tried to get the included test- diving in the pool which was really strange. The info point didn’t even know about the offer (which seems to be special for „the level“ guests) they took us to an external diving center which asked for 70cuc. I went back to the 5 floor of the hotel to ask the level manager - he confirmed the free offer and phoned with the info center again - I should ask for a special person there. Did so .... he just sent me back to the diving center - even after I told him I was there already and they wanted money. To be honest - I lost my desire to try diving. And I didn’t want to waste my time going back again to the fifth floor , diving center, Info point , and so on. All in all- not that happy with the stay. The rooms are the best in the hotel - but reminding that these rooms are only the expensive „level“ offer and the amount of money you pay .... not worth it. Maybe this is everywhere on Varadero - not sure - but not the kind of professionality I expected.

I’ve been at the Melia on 5 separate occasions.. i’ve referred my brother n wife who have joined me in the past as well we both just returned from there after 9 days arrived home Dec8,2019. This time I had added an upgrade for ocean view room for extra $$$. Upon arrival at 12:00 noon we were unable to get our room because the cleaning people were still cleaning.....came back at 3:00.....still cleaning.....back at 4:00 to finally get our room. Leaving Toronto at 7:00 am and finally getting your room at 4:00 was a relief but certainly the added wait at the hotel has never happened before and certainly unexpected. This upgrade seems to have put me in the older part of the hotel which lead to something unexpected. I seem to wake up in the morning full of mosquito bites (6-7 bites). Nobody at the hotel seems to no what type of bite it is but they say yes to mosquitoes. The bite is red , then the day later a head with puss forms. I’ve cottaged for 50 years and no mosquitoes bites form a head of puss?.... I don’t think there bed bugs but am unsure as sheets are changed everyday. What I did suspect was whatever was biting is coming up from the floor drain or broken down “bday drain in the washroom ? Needless to say this part I did not enjoy and have been scratching all week. I may have to rethink ware I wish to be staying as after 5 years this experience is wearing thin ( I’ve experienced this before here but didn’t want to complain). There have been some changes worth noting under the new government since Raul Castro has taken over. I’ve travelled to Cuba a total of 8 times with family members and will continue to go because Cuban’s are really beautiful people and are truly grateful for you coming to their beautiful island. There are always the few that can taint your experience and it feels very strange when you encounter our bad experience. It starts by taking a cab ride into Veradero for shopping at 10 cuc ...... we then walk along the strip shopping as we go then we decide to go from 63 rd street to 15 th street ware the large Flea market is. The Horse and Buggy pulls up and asks if he can take us there for 10 cuc ..... just like the cab ( no problem) . Once arriving at the flea market I take out 10 cuc but the driver won’t take it. I’ll wait for you no problem sir, no problem. We decided we can use him to take us back to 63 street. We were on his buggy at total 10 mins there 10 mins back..... what happened next we weren’t expecting.... the driver wanted 10 cup per person there and back or 80 cuc. I said no way you explicitly said 10 cuc ( just like the cabs), he argued and tried to say this is the price. I told him to call his boss because you cannot say one thing to your customers and then comeback with 80 cuc. I was truly taken a back by this “scam” that he was running (not saying there all like this.). I ended up paying him 40 cuc and a 4 cuc tip but it wasn’t enough so I just walked away. The concerirge at the hotel said there having problems with the horse n buggy drivers and it’s creating an extremely uncomfortable situation with travellers coming to the island. This was not happening when Fidel was in power but it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch now that his brother Raul is leading the country. The second change which is quite evident is the OFficial Cuban CIgar store Los AMericas PLaza , 63 street official CUban CIgar store. I call these the official stores as I’ve been in them buying cigars when the “ Fedural Police” come, review the books to see what has been sold and accounted for. Not anymore, the girls at the counters are experienced as I’ve seen the same women at the same stores offer up cigars at much inflated prices. Selling a box of cigars that are 135.00 cuc for 181.00 cuc. They are not putting the pricing on the underneath of the box. So plain and simple over the last 2 years none of this would be tolerated, For 2 boxes of cigars there hosing you for 92 cuc then converting into US dollars @ the exchange rate of 1.3444. That’s well over 100.00 profit on 2 boxes. Download the Cuban Cigar price list and have a pic on your cell. If they try to up charge you ( because they will now) ask to speak to the Manger or whoever is in charge , at that point they’ll give in just to get you out of the store without causing commotion so then can prey on the next( never ever happened before... but it’s certainly happening now).I myself have been a happy traveller to Cuba well over 8 times, I’ll generously tip every time I’m at breakfast lunch or dinner, the Housekeeping girls who clean our rooms daily and the bar tenders and servers alone as I’m aware of their financial hardship. You can can certainly see the appreciation from them as I believe their wage amount is quite low and every little bit counts. Be aware and ask questions, I can tell you I felt very very uncomfortable telling this young horse buggy man I was not going to pay what he demanded because my years of being in Cuba told me different. I’ve never experienced that from any of the Cuban people in the past.........It had been 2 years since I was back and a lot has changed.....just be careful.

Beach is incredible Food was some of the best in the Cuban resorts we’ve been to Staff were all very friendly. Shout out to Humberto Reyes who would set us up every morning with beach chairs and drinks, Luisto from the Level lounge who was super friendly and made us feel very welcomed, Yantsis our cleaning maid who would greet us every morning with a big smile, and Dayan and Jorge at the lobby bar who greeted us with a high five and a smile every time we came in. Room was very nice on the Level, would recommend Level over regular rooms as they are more modern

The hotel itself has alovely hotel lobby and the rooms are clean and very spacious. We stayed for 5 days and the food was pretty much the same everyday at the buffet, and only 3 restaurants were open during the whole stay! The buffet food consistented of meat and vegetarian food all next to each other and cross contamination of the food which is not ideal as a vegetarian! The meals at the restaurant were again meat heavy, although they did make me veggie dinners it just consisted of rice and vegetables for 4 nights! The buffet also had flies on the fruit!!! Half the options on the menu were not available! The bar by the pool had a lovely lady called Jenny who was the only member of staff who smiled - everyone else acted like their job was a chore! The toilets in the main lobby and near the pool were disgusting!!!! Overall, I think it is very expensive for what it is! I would not go back to this hotel or recommend anyone to go there!
