Thank you for choosing WestJet. The following are the terms and conditions, as they pertain to your travel with WestJet-operated flights. Please note, terms and conditions of carriage, baggage allowances, baggage fees and service fees may differ significantly if you're travelling with one of our airline partners. We strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions of the partner airline operating the flight. To view baggage allowances and fees of our code-share partners visit our airline partners page. Fees are collected on a one-way basis by the airline operating the first flight for each direction of your journey.

Same-day changes

A same-day change is a confirmed flight change requested starting at 24 hours before departure where the only difference is the time of departure. This means, when there is an earlier or later flight available, you may make a change, for a fee, at the airport or by calling WestJet if:

  • the flight is from the same origin to the same destination;
  • the flight is on the same calendar day as the original departure;
  • the flight is operated by WestJet (including WestJet Encore and WestJet Link by Pacific Coastal)
  • you purchased one of the following fares: Econo, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business, BusinessFlex or Member Exclusive (Economy, Premium or Business); and
  • there is a seat in the same cabin as originally booked.

Note: When flight is part of a WestJet Vacations package booking, same-day changes will apply to the flight only. WestJet and WestJet Vacations are not responsible for any impact to other planned or reserved activities, including but not limited to transfers, hotel reservations, excursions, etc. Any unused components will be forfeited.

When is a same-day change not available? Same-day flight changes are not available when:

  • a Basic fare has been purchased;
  • you are travelling on a charter flight;
  • there is only one departure scheduled for that day; or
  • there are no remaining departures for the day (i.e., you are on the last flight of the day).

If your reservation is not eligible for a same-day change, regular change and cancel rules (and applicable fees) will apply.

Cancellations outside of 24 hours of booking: After the 24-hour period, cancellations will be charged as follows:

  • Basic fares: these fares will not be refunded to you in the original form of payment when cancelled more than 24 hours after booking and the funds will not be returned to you in the form of a travel credit.

Payments, fees, and taxes

WestJet only accepts the WestJet RBC MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover® and Diners Club International® cards, MasterCard®, and Visa for purchases on board.

Taxes and fees vary based on the airport you arrive/depart from/to, the airports you connect to, and the country you’re travelling to and from, as outlined below.

For domestic flights, the following taxes and fees may be added:

  • Airport Improvement Fees (AIF) and Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) are generally collected by WestJet at the time of booking.
  • GST/HST/QST: Where applicable, these taxes are collected on flights and services provided in Canada. Generally, where the travel originates in the United States or the journey includes an international origin or destination, these taxes do not apply.
  • Air Travellers Security Charge (ATSC) is generally collected on all flights originating in Canada (other than connecting flights).

For travel to and from the United States, the following taxes and fees may be added:

Local governments and other authorities may impose certain departure taxes or fees. Some of these charges are collected by WestJet at the time of booking; others may be collected by the authority upon arrival or departure at the airport.

From time to time, our Guests may incur personal expenses which are a direct result of an unsatisfactory delivery of passenger transportation and/or related ancillary services. This may include hotel accommodations, charges for communications, ground transfer services or meals other than those served on board an aircraft.  On a case-by-case basis, WestJet may determine in its sole discretion whether to reimburse the Guest’s expenses. The Guest will be required to provide receipts as proof of the expense incurred. If WestJet elects to reimburse the Guest, a portion of the amount paid is on account of tax. This policy is not intended to supersede, or conflict with, requirements under applicable passenger protection regulations.

Change and cancel credits

WestJet change and cancel credits are valid for one (1) year after the date of creation and are transferable.

Credits are not accepted as a form of payment for travel on WestJet Vacations bookings or any WestJet flight connecting to a WestJet Vacations booking.

Credits may be accepted as a form of payment on bookings made through a travel agent.

We recommend that you confirm all details on how credits are handled by your travel agency before booking.

Advice to international guests on limitations of liability

Guests embarking upon a journey involving an ultimate destination or a stop in a country other than the country of departure are advised that the provisions of an International Treaty known as the Warsaw Convention and its amendments may be applicable to their entire journey including the portion entirely within the countries of departure and destination. The Convention governs, and in most cases limits, the liability of carriers to guests for death or personal injury to approximately 100,000 SDRs. Additional protections can usually be obtained by purchasing insurance from a private company. Such insurance is not affected by any limitation of the carrier's liability under the Warsaw Convention. For further information please consult your airline or insurance company representative.

Notice of baggage liability limitations

For most international travel (including domestic portions of international journeys) liability for loss, delay, or damage to baggage is limited to 1,288 SDRs per incident per passenger (approximately $2,300 CAD subject to currency exchange rates) unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid.

If you have purchased excess valuation – which is available at the airport, before departure, for a fee - the maximum liability is $3,000 CAD/USD (which includes the standard 1,288 SDRs).

Notice - overselling of flights

We’re proud that we do not intentionally oversell our flights – we only sell the same number of seats that we have available on an aircraft.  However, there are instances, operationally, where for example we need to switch to a smaller aircraft, or there may be a mechanical issue with a seat, that can create a situation where a flight becomes overbooked. In these cases, we’ll work with our guests, and ask for volunteers willing to take a later flight in exchange for compensation.

If there are not enough volunteers, we may need to deny boarding to guests in accordance with their particular boarding priority. With few exceptions, guests denied boarding involuntarily are entitled to compensation. The complete rules for the payment of compensation and our airline's boarding priorities are available at all airport ticket counter and boarding locations. If you’re travelling with one of our partner airlines, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with their terms of carriage.
