Good food, welcoming atmosphere, reasonable Covid precautions, asinine flimsy bracelet/room key

The Allegro was just getting up to speed after a long Covid closure when we visited in mid-November 2020. Visitors get a forehead temperature check on checkin and before admission to any and every meal. Social-distance seating at meals and among the beach chairs. Very welcoming staff and good food at all the restaurants and buffets. You will need a bar-code scanner app on your phone at checkin, so as to link to a map of the property and to a daily events "newsletter." You'll also need the scanner to upload a menu at any of the specialty restaurants. I gather that this is a Covid safety measure. The demographics of the resort: I'd estimate 80 percent of guests were from Mexico; the remainder, Canadians and Americans. An occasional European. Lots of divers. There's a dive shop on the property. The Palancar Reef is just offshore about 300 yards; you could swim to it but the safety commissars won't let you. There's the usual floating safety perimeter that goes out maybe 70 yards. I ignored it but got whistled back by the lifeguard. There is, I admit, substantial boat traffic along the reef so the safety measure is not unreasonable. So if you want to snorkel to a fishy reef from your hotel beach, this is not the hotel for you. I've stayed at 8 other all-inclusives and all of them affix a pliable bracelet to your wrist to identify you as a hotel guest. The Allegro has a different bracelet: It's a flimsy cord to which a small plasticine chip-embedded object is affixed. This serves as your room key. The hotel clerk who admits you will use a needle-nose pliers to "secure" this bracelet to your wrist by pinching a small metal fitting, and she will tell you there's a $50 fine if you lose the bracelet. My wife's bracelet came off during normal activity on the first day of our stay. My bracelet came off during normal activity on the final day of our stay. It's a poorly implemented technology that does not work, and it's unfair that the hotel guest must pay for the hotel's bad choice of room key / identification. For that reason alone I would not return to the Allegro, nor to any Barcelo property if it is using this asinine flimsy bracelet as a room key.

Poor management at this resort. Expedia email the resort twice asking if they would honor the price at time of booking due to American Airlines cancelling flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.. Tried to contact the resort and was a joke, they did not answer and when they did the manager was never around and was told they would pass the message to the manager and that they would get back with us. Finally after two weeks a gave up and cancelled the whole trip,

My wife and I had the fortune of being the firsts guests after 7 months closure due to the pandemic. The personal have an incredible charisma and were truly happy about attending tourists again after these complex months. All the personal service was amazing and the amenities of the hotel were amazing as well. We recommend this hotel in Cozumel 100%.

I needed a dive trip, no small undertaking with COVID-19 raging across the US. I've stayed at Allegro twice before. This trip was different: the resort is obviously at very low capacity due to the pandemic but they are managing it splendidly. All staff are wearing masks at all times. There is only one restaurant open for each meal, so you aren't getting the variety you normally would, but they did switch it up each night - one night Western, then Italian, then Mexican, you get the idea. Food is either served to you (unlike a normal buffet where you serve yourself) or on individually wrapped plates. Guests are generally good about wearing masks any time they are up from their tables. There is hand sanitizer at each bar and restaurant, and they do temperature checks at each meal. No masks are required around the pool or beach area, but there is plenty of room to allow for social distancing due to the low capacity. Grounds were well-kept despite several storms in recent weeks, and staff was always at work cleaning the pools, beach, and/or room areas. With so few people at the resort, the activities staff had their hands full trying to keep up games, etc, but Arbey has infectious energy and is a great Captain. He has the perfect personality for this job! Funny, and just pushy enough to get people into the pool or beach volleyball games. Other shout-outs to staff include Astrid, who helped me extend my stay after bad weather cancelled diving for 2.5 days of my trip, and the lovely hostess at breakfast and lunch, who is super friendly. I enjoyed saying to hello to her at each meal. Oh, and the beach bartender was great and remembered my drink after only the second one. Overall very friendly staff - nothing bad to say about a single person. I did not use the house dive shop on this trip as I have a friend with his own shop now. The beach has been eroded by all the recent storms, but it's still in decent shape. The pools were all very clean and the hot tub was warm. If you upgrade to the premium level, it comes with decent wifi that reaches the beach with no problems I even had a couple of video calls while on the beach and it was fine. Cell service is very minimal. I have one complaint: The hotel is charging a "ransom" of $3.50 for each time a boat picks you up at the pier unless you are using the house dive shop (ProDive). This is a new practice, probably due to covid and the loss of business (I didn't ask), and is really just...pretty lame. Two guys I talked to just jumped off the pier and swam to their boat to avoid paying it. Pretty resourceful. :D

It always feels great to vacation at Allegro Cozumel. Besides the gorgeous beach wonderful diving sites, the staff like Carlos Perez and Juanini-Shonny truly make this place a home away from home. They went above and beyond to make sure each one of us receive excellent service. For example, we celebrated my father’s birthday during one trip. With a short notice, Carlos Perez went extra mile to make that birthday a very special one. We can’t thank him enough and we always remember that vacation because of people like Carlos Perez, Juanini-Shonny and many others.
